IntroduçãoO tratamento com prótese total convencional tem sido, por muito tempo, o tratamento de escolha para reabilitar pacientes desdentados totais, entretanto, diversas são as queixas relatadas por seus usuários. As maiores dificuldades de adaptação e de uso estão associadas principalmente às próteses totais mandibulares 1 , sendo as mais comuns a falta de retenção e de estabilidade 2,3 , fatores esses diferenciais entre o sucesso e o fracasso nesse tipo de tratamento 4 . Uma alternativa de tratamento para esse tipo de paciente é a técnica da zona neutra, a qual determina uma área específica para o posicionamento dos dentes artificiais e da base da prótese, onde as forças geradas pela língua são neutralizadas pelas forças geradas pelos lábios e pelas bochechas 5-7 e, assim, a atividade muscular não desloca a prótese, aumentando as taxas de sucesso do tratamento 8 .
