Situações de emergências podem acontecer a qualquer momento no consultório odontológico, durante o atendimento ou até mesmo na sala de espera quando o paciente se encontra apreensivo. Diante de uma situação de emergência é necessário que os profissionais saibam intervir para evitar um possível agravamento do quadro, o que pode, em muitos casos, cursar com o óbito. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o conhecimento dos estudantes de odontologia sobre primeiros socorros e suporte básico de vida (SBV). Realizou-se uma pesquisa com 63 estudantes devidamente matriculados no curso de odontologia através de um questionário semiestruturado contendo 19 questões sobre conhecimentos gerais de SBV e primeiros socorros. O estudo revelou que, embora 44,4% dos estudantes já tenham vivenciado situações em que alguém necessitou de primeiros socorros, a maioria nunca recebeu algum tipo de treinamento de primeiros socorros ou SBV (87,3%). Porém a falta de treinamento não impediu que 35% prestassem socorro, embora 98,4% dos estudantes deixaram de prestar socorro por medo de errar. Portanto, concluiu-se que a maioria dos discentes de Odontologia que foram entrevistados não são aptos a prestar primeiros socorros, tornando-se necessário o treinamento em SBV na grade curricular.
