The purpose of this article is to study the processes that take place in modern Chinese calligraphy, their influence on traditional art, its transformation and preservation of cultural heritage. Research methods. The study is based on the methods of historical periodization and stylistic generalization, which ensured the systematization and analysis of the collected material, as well as its structuring. The results. This article systematizes accumulated research of the topic and examines the transformational processes in history of Chinese calligraphy; the ways, throughout history, in which certain styles have been transformed into the others and their relevance to modern art. Prominent calligraphers of China have been creating and perfecting the art of calligraphy for more than 3,000 years, methodological frameworks have harmoniously coexisted with the development and invention of new calligraphic styles. Restricted by rules and traditions at each stage of historical development, calligraphers sought self-expression and their own contribution to the development of the art of calligraphy. Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution significantly influenced the development of calligraphy, but this art experienced the most active and revolutionary rise after the Cultural Revolution, when world-known information became available to Chinese artists. Intercultural exchange, exhibitions, education in Western countries (Europe and North America), all these have broadened the mind significantly and influenced the projects of modern artists. Modern calligraphers, feeling responsibility for the transformational processes which are taking place, balance at the edge of globalization and traditions in Chinese calligraphy and introduce their own vision of traditional art in the modern context.Conclusions. In the context of modern world art, Chinese calligraphy, as one of the pillars of China's cultural heritage, has become the object of modernization, where traditional art is the source of inspiration. Contemporary artists turn to traditions, quote and transform them. Without inventing new styles, they express themselves, transforming traditions and filling their works with new, conceptual contents. In this way, by modernizing traditions, their preservation takes place. The article will be useful during an in-depth study of the art of Chinese calligraphy, as well as world art history.
