Objetivo Caracterizar aspectos gestacionales y complicaciones presentadas en mujeres gestantes que asisten a su control prenatal en una institución de segundo nivel. Metodología Se realizó un estudio de carácter descriptivo, de corte y retrospectivo. Se seleccionaron y revisaron 162 historias clínicas, a partir de una base de datos institucional, de mujeres que ingresaron a su control prenatal en el segundo y tercer trimestre de su embarazo y que hubiesen concluido su etapa de gestación. Los datos se analizaron en el programa SPSS versión 19.0. Resultados El 38,3% de las gestantes no estaban aseguradas al Sistema General de Seguridad Social en Salud y 74,1% fueron clasificadas como de alto riesgo. Las complicaciones más frecuentes fueron: amenaza de parto prematuro (11,7%), infecciones de las vías urinarias (7,4%), hipertensión inducida por el embarazo (6,8%) e infecciones vaginales (5,6%). Se observaron relaciones estadísticamente significativas para: clasificación del riesgo en su primer control, con la presentación de al menos una complicación gestacional (p=0,037); infecciones de vías urinarias y vaginales con la amenaza de parto pretérmino: (p=0,006) y (p=0,012) respectivamente y antecedentes de hipertensión inducida por el embarazo con la presentación de la misma patología en la gestación actual (p=0,001). Conclusiones Las asociaciones encontradas permiten recomendar que los factores de riesgo como las infecciones urinarias y vaginales y el antecedente de hipertensión inducida por el embarazo deben ser intervenidos temp ntación de complicaciones severas en la madre y el feto.
