This paper addresses some evocations and representations of memory of the Argentinean dictatorship through post-dictatorial artistic photography. Two groups of works are analysed hereto, all produced in Argentina from 1983 to our days. The first group includes underground productions that recur on the topics of memory of repression and forced disappearance, while exploring the urban with astounded gaze, highlighting the traces left on the city by a painful past. The second group examines photographic productions that have, as a starting point, family pictures of missing people (desaparecidos). The new reconstructed family photographs are achieved by the intervention and remaking through collage, montage and staged environments that evoke and imitate the past
Abstract:The starting point of this article is a photo of Julio López, ex detained-disappeared in Argentina's last dictatorship. López disappeared again in 2006, after giving testimony at the trial that convicted repressor Miguel Etchecolatz to life imprisonment. One iconic photo of Lopez will now be reinserted in another context, projected onto a river. From this, the peculiarities of some other photographic memories of Argentina's recent history will be displayed. Specially, as they are visual artifacts of memory that tense the question of the landscape and the forced disappearance.
Th is article is framed within the discussion about the ways in which aesthetic artefacts build up memories of traumatic social episodes. I will focus on one of the many photographic memories of the sons and daughters of the victims of the last Argentinean dictatorship. Th e book Pozo de aire [Well of Air] by Guadalupe Gaona (2009) presents old images of her family album -among which we fi nd the only photograph of the author and her father -mixed together with her own photography and poetry. Th is combination of images and words allows her to fi nd her father within the landscape and facilitate an impossible reunion with him.
