Objective To assess the influence of the body weight in functional capacity and pain of adult and elderly individuals with knee osteoarthritis.Methods The sample consisted of 107 adult and elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis divided into two groups (adequate weight/adiposity and excessive weight/adiposity) according to body mass index and percent of body fat mass, assessed by electric bioimpedance. Subjects were evaluated for functional mobility (Timed Up and Go Test), pain, stiffness and function (Western Ontario and MacMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index − WOMAC), pain intensity (Visual Analogue Scale − VAS) and pressure pain tolerance threshold (algometry in vastus medialis and vastus lateralis muscles). Data were analyzed with Statistical Package of the Social Sciences, version 22 for Windows. Comparisons between groups were made through Student’s t test, with significance level set at 5%.Results There was predominance of females in the sample (81.3%), and mean age was 61.8±10.1 years. When dividing the sample by both body mass index and adiposity, 89.7% of them had weight/adiposity excess, and 59.8% were obese. There was no difference between groups regarding age, pain intensity, pressure pain tolerance threshold, functional mobility, stiffness and function. However, pain (WOMAC) was higher (p=0.05) in the group of patients with weight or adiposity excess, and pain perception according to VAS was worse in the group of obese patients (p=0.05).Conclusion Excessive weight had negative impact in patients with osteoarthritis, increasing pain assessed by WOMAC or VAS, although no differences were observed in functionality and pressure pain tolerance.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Inflammation is a defense response of the body to a cellular damage caused by physical, chemical or biological agents, which triggers, among other factors, pain. Although inflammation plays an important role in the protection and regeneration of tissue injury, inflammatory pain results in decreased quality of life. In view of this, the development of safe and less invasive forms for the treatment of inflammatory pain is of great importance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antihyperalgesic potential of the culture supernatant of keratinocytes and human fibroblasts in an experimental model of inflammatory hyperalgesia. METHODS: Evaluation of carrageenan induced inflammatory hyperalgesia through the use of electronic von Frey in animal models treated with culture supernatant of keratinocytes and fibroblasts. RESULTS: Local administration of naloxone, a nonselective opioid antagonist, in peripheral tissue, has been observed to inhibit the antihyperalgesic effect of the keratinocyte culture supernatant. Fibroblast culture supernatant on days 1 and 3 reverses for 2 hours the carrageenan induced inflammatory hyperalgesia, which is mediated by µ opioid agonist. Resumo Introdução A hipertensão arterial sistêmica (HAS) atinge cerca de 30% da população adulta, sendo o maior fator de risco para lesões cardíacas e cerebrovasculares, e a terceira causa de invalidez. Objetivo Determinar a prevalência de indivíduos com HAS e os níveis de conhecimento, tratamento e controle da doença, por meio de um método diferenciado de busca ativa. Método Realizou-se estudo transversal, de base populacional, com amostra representativa composta por 409 indivíduos adultos, na área de abrangência de uma Unidade Básica de Saúde com Estratégia de Saúde da Família, na periferia da zona sul da cidade de São Paulo. As visitas domiciliares compreenderam medidas antropométricas e de pressão arterial (PA), além da aplicação de um questionário sociodemográfico. Resultados A prevalência de HAS na população foi de 42,5%. A maior parte dos indivíduos hipertensos (94%) tinha conhecimento da doença, 95% deles faziam tratamento e 48% apresentavam PA controlada. Foram identificados 45 novos casos de HAS, desses, 77% foram encontrados em horário diferenciado (domingos das 10 às 16h), representando 27% dos hipertensos. Conclusão O método diferenciado mostrou-se eficiente como estratégia de busca ativa para novos casos de HAS em locais onde ainda existe aparente subnotificação.
