Introdução: O adoecimento e a hospitalização vivenciados por homens requerem a ampliação de sua autopercepção sobre o processo saúde-doença, e o período pós-alta hospitalar demanda adaptações e reabilitação, gerando necessidades individuais de autocuidado. Objetivo: Discutir a demanda de autocuidado domiciliar de homens no período pós-alta hospitalar à luz da Teoria de Orem. Métodos: Pesquisa exploratória, qualitativa, realizada com oito homens no período pós-alta hospitalar de um hospital público de Minas Gerais. Coletaram-se dados de caracterização e entrevistas individuais em profundidade. Realizou-se análise de conteúdo (adensamento teórico - Pearson ≥ 70) com apoio dos Softwares SPSS versão 24 e NVivo Pro11®. Foram atendidos os requisitos ético-legais. Resultados: Foram categorias: 1) Trajetória do autocuidado masculino e reflexões sobre estilo de vida prévio e 2) Redimensionamento de condutas diante das exigências terapêuticas vivenciadas e reflexões sobre as perspectivas de autocuidado. Elas foram discutidas à luz de atividades, requisitos e exigências terapêuticas de autocuidado na perspectiva de Orem. Conclusão: O autocuidado de homens no domicílio após alta hospitalar foi retratado por experiências que agregaram conhecimentos/informações sobre o processo saúde-doença, cujas práticas envolvem a autovalorização da saúde, com promessas de adesão ao tratamento e a hábitos de vida saudáveis.Palavras-chave: autocuidado, saúde do homem, alta do paciente, enfermagem domiciliar, teoria de enfermagem.
