ABSTRACTMany works have been produced in the field of external growth strategy concerning large quoted companies. Medium-sized firms have focused few attention. This work aims to identify, to organize into a hierarchy, then to analyze factors which are going to incite or, on the contrary, to dissuade a patrimonial medium-sized subcontractor to undertake an external growth strategy. The three essential parameters of a strategic decision are considered in this analysis : aspiration of the leader-owner, potential of the company and requirements of its environment. The empirical study, based on the mailshot of a questionnaire, concerns 147 non-quoted French companies. Analytical methods of data are explanatory : it is essentially about logistic regressions.Obtained results lead to question about the constrainted dimension of the strategic action of the medium-sized subcontractors in view of the new purchasing and supply requirements of their principals.
As pointed out by Raza-Ullah et al. (2014, p. 17) "while coopetition theorists have attempted to explain the unifying character of industrial, relational, and firm-specific factors that propel competitor firms to cooperate, little is known concerning their divergent character that forces partner firms to compete".To understand the dynamics of coopetition, it helps to think along two-continua because levels of competition and collaboration can vary independently (Bengtsson et al. 2010;Padula and Dagnino 2007). This study is based on this twocontinua approach. It aims to identify and explain the dynamics of coopetition toward competition by using the concept of power."Power is an endemic part of the relationships" (Akpinar and Vincze 2016, p.54). Yet, in the understanding of the dynamics of coopetition, Akpinar and Vincze (2016) emphasize that "the functioning of power is little understood and even neglected" (p. 54). This research aims to fill this gap.Admittedly, the literature on coopetition recognizes that interdependencies explain cooperation and competition (Bengtsson and Koch 2000) and that the difference in power, by increasing the risk of opportunism, can lead to conflicts (Bengtsson & Johansson 2014;Tidström 2014). But these studies
