The analysis reveals that Apple has successfully created the video that could portray the hectic situation people felt when they could only do their activities inside their home during COVID-19 pandemic. While being busy with their lifestyle, they use Apple products by utilizing its features to help them. Furthermore, this study opens new possibilities for other researchers to apply the same theory that has been used in this thesis to analyze film and video with different topics.
This research examined Hermanto Tanoko's politeness while asking questions and using address terms to Tahir and Jehian Panangian Sijabat on his podcast. The writer also compared Hermanto Tanoko's politeness to Jehian Panangian Sijabat and Tahir to find the similarities and differences. This research cites Watts (2003) for the politeness theory. Since politeness is cultural, the writer employed notions from Javanese culture by Suseno (2001). This qualitative research analyzed utterances made by Hermanto Tanoko. Hermanto Tanoko shows hormat (respect) by utilizing personal name, family term, or a combination of family term and personal name to address older people and using personal names to address younger people. Hermanto Tanoko used rukun (harmonious) while asking questions by hedging, being indirect, displaying attention or compassion, and joking. Despite their age gap, Hermanto Tanoko is polite to both guests which might happened due to the fact that Hermanto Tanoko is raised in the Indonesian (Javanese) culture.
In this study, the reading strategies used by students of high and intermediate reading proficiency levels were qualitatively examined. Reading strategies are important factors that affect someone's reading proficiency. In the development of education, reading strategies are continuously carried out to facilitate the learning process and sharpen students' reading skills. The purpose of this study is to discover the reading strategies used by the English Department students with high and intermediate reading proficiency levels in reading academic texts. This study uses reading strategies theory by Grabe (2009) combined with the interview questions by Mokhtari and Reichard (2002) to examine the reading strategies of ten participants consisting of five people with high reading proficiency level and five other people with intermediate reading proficiency level. This study showed that students of high reading proficiency levels tend to use more reading strategies than students with intermediate reading proficiency level. The biggest difference is in the use of text-structure awareness and inferencing strategies. It indicates that the mastery of text structure is directly related to reading effectiveness. Without text structure awareness, other reading strategies such as summarizing, inferencing, and elaborative interrogation will be seriously disrupted. Keywords: Reading Strategies, Academic Text, High Reading Proficiency Level, Intermediate Reading Proficiency Level
This study aims to find out the types of politeness2 that are found in @kulinersby’s promotion culinary business promotion, and from there, the comments that are included as politeness1. The analysis is based on the theories of Brown and Levinson (1987) and Watts (2003). Watts (2003) states that what is theoretically considered as politeness (politeness2) in Brown and Levinson (1987) may not be the case in reality (politeness1). This qualitative study is limited to video-based posts, with the comments only related to how the account’s administrator promotes culinary businesses. From this research, the writers find that even though both politeness2 and politeness1 conflict with each other, there are some similarities that are found in analyzing both politeness. In conclusion, despite the lasting influence of Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory, it still has some notable flaws, notably with universality and multiple interpretation of the strategies by different individuals, among others.
