The aim of the current study is to diagnose Brucella spp. infection using methods such as serology, bacterial isolation, and molecular analysis in buffaloes bred in Maranhão State. In order to do so, 390 samples of buffalo serum were subjected to serological tests, to Rose Bengal Plate Test (RBPT) and to 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) combined with slow agglutination test (SAT). Vaginal swabs were collected from seropositive animals and subjected to bacterial isolation and to generic PCR. According to the serological test, 16 animals had a positive reaction to the confirmatory test (2-ME/SAT). As for bacterial isolation, three samples resulted in the isolation of Brucella spp.-characteristic colonies, which were confirmed through PCR. These results confirmed Brucella spp. infection in the buffalo herd from Maranhão State.
Pesq. Vet. Bras. Intercorrência entre leucose enzoótica e brucelose em búfalos (Bubalus bubalis) em sistema de produção extensivo 1 Nancyleni P. This study was carried out to evaluate the intercurrence of brucellosis and enzootic leucosis in buffaloes in extensive production system by establishing the prevalence of reagent buffaloes for speciϐic diagnostic tests. We analyzed 232 animals serologically by the technique of double immunodiffusion in agarose gel (AGID) for diagnostic of leucosis and the tampon acidiϐied antigen (TAA) test, followed by conϐirmatory tests of 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) and slow serum agglutination (SSA) in tubes for diagnostic of brucellosis. The prevalence of buffaloes that were positive for leucosis and brucellosis tests were 4.21% (10/232) and 5.18%(12/232) respectively. The results of this investigation indicated that the diseases occur in the population studied, however, with low prevalence and without depending on the occurrence of both.INDEX TERMS: Brucella abortus, VLEB, bubalines , Maranhão.
AbstractThis study was performed in order to determine the prevalence of bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), and the main factors related of the infection in dairy cows not vaccinated against BoHV-1 from state of Maranhão. Serum samples were submitted to an indirect ELISA test for detection of BoHV-1 antibodies. An epidemiological questionnaire was applied for each herd to investigate variables that could be associated with this infection. The samples were collected from animals with clinical signs suggestive of infection, such as reproductive and respiratory signs or animals without clinical signs of infection. Of the 920 serum samples analyzed, 71.30% (n = 656) were positive by ELISA, and 100% of the properties had at least one positive animal. Among the risk factors evaluated, aged 3-7 years showed statistical significance (P <0.05) associated with BoHV-1. The study results indicate that the prevalence of antibodies against BoHV-1 was high and that only age was associated with risk of BoHV-1.
