Data on menstrual experiences and their impact on quality of life among women in developing countries are scant. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of dysmenorrhoea among adolescent girls in Sidon city and suburbs, Lebanon, and to explore its possible relationship with menstrual experience. In a cross-sectional design, 389 post-menarcheal schoolgirls aged 13-19 years were selected using a cluster random sampling method. Of these 161 (41.4%) were regularly or sometimes absent from school due to menstrual problems and 289 (74.3%) experienced dysmenorrhoea. Nevertheless only 7.3% of the girls had consulted a physician about dysmenorrhoea. Three-quarters of these young women (75.2%) had scores indicating negative menstrual experience based on the Menstrual Experience and Behavior Questionnaire. Significant predictors of dysmenorrhoea were negative menstrual experience, younger age of girl, longer duration of bleeding and longer cycle length. Better reproductive health educational programmes focusing on menstruation are needed for female adolescents.
Intimate partner violence against women is common in Lebanon and can lead to major health problems. However, the incidence of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in battered women has not been extensively explored in the Lebanese cultural context. The objectives of this study were as follows: (a) to determine the prevalence of PTSD symptoms among women in Lebanon who have been physically abused by their partners, (b) to assess whether the rate of PTSD symptoms varied according to sociodemographic variables, and (c) to reveal other attributes that might be risk factors for developing symptoms of PTSD. Of the 95 physically abused women who met inclusion criteria, 85 completed a questionnaire including sociodemographic questions, the physical abuse subscale of the Composite Abuse Scale (CAS), and the PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C). Results showed a high prevalence of PTSD symptoms (97%), positively correlated with physical violence (r = .719). Lower education level and recent abuse were correlated with symptom severity, as were the number of problematic habitual behaviors in the abusive partner and the use of psychotherapy. Increased involvement of health care professionals in the detection of women at risk, with referral to appropriate resources, is suggested to improve prevention and management efforts.
The profession of Physiotherapy has been defined by the "World Confederation for Physical Therapy" (WCPT) as the services provided to individuals and populations to develop, maintain or restore an optimal functioning throughout the life. This includes services facing all the circumstances which may take place and which are caused by the age, musculoskeletal disorders, pain, diseases, disorders, environmental conditions and many other situations. The physiotherapists are thus called upon to identify and maximize the quality of life of individuals by focusing on the promotion of health, the prevention, treatment, intervention and the adaptation or even the rehabilitation. For this, in the clinical environment, the physiotherapist is confronted by a variety of clinical cases which can be very simple or having a level of complexity increased. This project presents a case that can be considered rare but requires the implementation and the integration of multiple skills to be able to manage it. It is a case of pulmonary hypertension chronic thromboembolic which has gone unnoticed for several years and which is complicated by the existence of a sociocultural component which adds to this case an additional challenge when it is supported. The success in the management of this case relies on of the establishment of a good communication with the patient and on the establishment of a relationship of trust which requires of the physiotherapist to detach from social prejudice and to present themselves as an impartial person in dealing with the individuals.
