Nancy L. Shanklin, an associate professor at the University of Colorado Denver, is the former director of the Literacy Coaching Clearinghouse, a joint project of the International Reading Association and National Council of Teachers of English. She advocates secondary‐school coaching programs that apply what can be learned from experienced coaches then determine their impacts on teachers' practices and students' achievement. Her development with Colorado educators of a state‐level network promoting adolescent literacy is attracting teachers from outside the state. She believes research on secondary educators' actions relative to Common Core standards and RTI can be productive directions to take. Research also is needed into the language and literacy that students use across the curriculum.
