Forecasting domestic and foreign power demand is crucial for planning the operation and expansion of facilities. Power demand patterns are very complex owing to energy market deregulation. Therefore, developing an appropriate power forecasting model for an electrical grid is challenging. In particular, when consumers use power irregularly, the utility cannot accurately predict short- and long-term power consumption. Utilities that experience short- and long-term power demands cannot operate power supplies reliably; in worst-case scenarios, blackouts occur. Therefore, the utility must predict the power demands by analyzing the customers’ power consumption patterns for power supply stabilization. For this, a medium- and long-term power forecasting is proposed. The electricity demand forecast was divided into medium-term and long-term load forecast for customers with different power consumption patterns. Among various deep learning methods, deep neural networks (DNNs) and long short-term memory (LSTM) were employed for the time series prediction. The DNN and LSTM performances were compared to verify the proposed model. The two models were tested, and the results were examined with the accuracies of the six most commonly used evaluation measures in the medium- and long-term electric power load forecasting. The DNN outperformed the LSTM, regardless of the customer’s power pattern.
Renewable energy has recently gained considerable attention. In particular, the interest in wind energy is rapidly growing globally. However, the characteristics of instability and volatility in wind energy systems also affect power systems significantly. To address these issues, many studies have been carried out to predict wind speed and power. Methods of predicting wind energy are divided into four categories: physical methods, statistical methods, artificial intelligence methods, and hybrid methods. In this study, we proposed a hybrid model using modified LSTM (Long short-term Memory) to predict short-term wind power. The data adopted by modified LSTM use the current observation data (wind power, wind direction, and wind speed) rather than previous data, which are prediction factors of wind power. The performance of modified LSTM was compared among four multivariate models, which are derived from combining the current observation data. Among multivariable models, the proposed hybrid method showed good performance in the initial stage with Model 1 (wind power) and excellent performance in the middle to late stages with Model 3 (wind power, wind speed) in the estimation of short-term wind power. The experiment results showed that the proposed model is more robust and accurate in forecasting short-term wind power than the other models.
Electricity demand forecasting enables the stable operation of electric power systems and reduces electric power consumption. Previous studies have predicted electricity demand through a correlation analysis between power consumption and weather data; however, this analysis does not consider the influence of various factors on power consumption, such as industrial activities, economic factors, power horizon, and resident living patterns of buildings. This study proposes an efficient power demand prediction using deep learning techniques for two industrial buildings with different power consumption patterns. The problems are presented by analyzing the correlation between the power consumption and weather data by season for industrial buildings with different power consumption patterns. Four models were analyzed using the most important factors for predicting power consumption and weather data (temperature, humidity, sunlight, solar radiation, total cloud cover, wind speed, wind direction, humidity, and vapor pressure). The prediction horizon for power consumption forecasting was kept at 24 h. The existing deep learning methods (DNN, RNN, CNN, and LSTM) cannot accurately predict power consumption when it increases or decreases rapidly. Hence, a method to reduce this prediction error is proposed. DNN, RNN, and LSTM were superior when using two-year electricity consumption rather than one-year electricity consumption and weather data.
Solar power generation is an increasingly popular renewable energy topic. Photovoltaic (PV) systems are installed on buildings to efficiently manage energy production and consumption. Because of its physical properties, electrical energy is produced and consumed simultaneously; therefore solar energy must be predicted accurately to maintain a stable power supply. To develop an efficient energy management system (EMS), 22 multivariate numerical models were constructed by combining solar radiation, sunlight, humidity, temperature, cloud cover, and wind speed. The performance of the models was compared by applying a modified version of the traditional long short-term memory (LSTM) approach. The experimental results showed that the six meteorological factors influence the solar power forecast regardless of the season. These are, from most to least important: solar radiation, sunlight, wind speed, temperature, cloud cover, and humidity. The models are rated for suitability to provide medium- and long-term solar power forecasts, and the modified LSTM demonstrates better performance than the traditional LSTM.
In this paper, we propose a wind forecasting method that reflects wind characteristics to improve the accuracy of wind power prediction. The proposed method consists of extracting wind characteristics and predicting power generation. The part that extracts the characteristics of the wind uses correlation analysis of power generation amount, wind direction and wind speed. Based on the correlation between the wind direction and the wind speed, the feature vector is extracted by clustering using the K-means method. In the prediction part, machine learning is performed using the SVR that generalizes the SVM so that an arbitrary real value can be predicted.Machine learning was compared with the proposed method which reflects the characteristics of wind and the conventional method which does not reflect wind characteristics. To verify the accuracy and feasibility of the proposed method, we used the data collected from three different locations of Jeju Island wind farm.Experimental results show that the error of the proposed method is better than that of general wind power generation.
