Las secciones aéreas de las raíces de Thoracocarpus bissectus (Vell.) Harling son utilizadas en la Amazonía peruana para elaborar artesanías de uso doméstico y comercial. Sin embargo, se conoce muy poco sobre el potencial de supervivencia y producción de estas plantas después del aprovechamiento. Por lo tanto, se evaluó laproducción y crecimiento de raíces nuevas y la supervivencia de plantas después del aprovechamiento a tres intensidades (las plantas fueron dejadas con sólo una, dos y tres raíces en contacto con el suelo) desde marzo 2004- marzo 2007. Los resultados muestran que la intensidad de aprovechamiento afectó la supervivencia de las plantas, y el 46.7%, 86.7% y 93.3% de las plantas dejadas con sólo una, dos y tres raíces sobrevivieron, respectivamente. La producción de raíces nuevas por planta fue muy variable y no significativamente diferente entre los tratamientos. Las plantas que sobrevivieron produjeron nuevas raíces; sin embargo, un bosque con plantas aprovechadas a bajas intensidades producirá en total más nuevas raíces que un bosque cuyas plantas fueron aprovechadas a alta intensidad debido a la diferencia en la supervivencia de las plantas. Las plantas sobrevivientes, 4 dejadas con sólo una raíz produjeron en total 80 m de nuevas raíces, 10 dejadas con dos raíces produjeron 197.2 m, y 11 dejadas con tres raíces produjeron 386.1 m. En conclusión, el manejo de T. bissectus debe enfocarse en la supervivencia de las plantas, y considerar el aprovechamiento de las raíces a baja intensidad
