A organização dos processos de trabalho nos quais estão inseridos os trabalhadores produz graves conseqüências sobre a saúde. Essas têm origem, principalmente, na separação entre concepção e execução, introduzidas pelos modelos de gestão taylorista e fordista. As mudanças promovidas pela implementação do modelo de gestão japonês passaram a demandar um trabalhador aparentemente mais engajado ao seu trabalho, apto a realizar diversas operações e mais escolarizado. Porém, observa-se que ao sofrimento daqueles que trabalham em tarefas que não foram atingidas pela reestruturação produtiva, acrescenta-se o sofrimento provocado pelas transformações em curso no trabalho, exigindo novos atributos ao trabalhador, atingindo a saúde física e mental.
Este artigo analisa a relação entre trajetórias profissionais pós-deligamento e atributos profissionais acumulados pelo exercício profissional. Trata-se de uma pesquisa realizada em 2003, com 20 trabalhadores desligados dos ramos industriais mecânico e material de transporte do Município de Caxias do Sul (RS). Parte-se da hipótese de que a introdução de inovações tecnológicas nos processos de trabalho da indústria coloca novas exigências em termos de atributos profissionais dos trabalhadores, expressas na contratação, repercutindo, portanto, nas possibilidades de reinserção profissional. Ao mesmo tempo, dadas as especificidades da reestruturação industrial em curso no Brasil, supõe-se que as novas demandas não se estendam a todos os postos de trabalho, atenuando as dificuldades de reinserção profissional. Com a reconstituição das trajetórias dos trabalhadores investigados, verificou-se que, em sua maioria, estes retornaram à indústria de transformação, o que foi constatado, igualmente, entre aqueles que não apresentavam atributos referentes ao trabalho com equipamentos de base microeletrônica ou, ainda, níveis de escolaridade requeridos pelo mercado de trabalho. As informações coletadas revelaram também que outros elementos interferiram na reinserção profissional, como a existência de vagas no mercado de trabalho e o estabelecimento de vínculos pessoais.
