Kilim motifleri, desenleri, yüzyıllardır kadınlar tarafından, aşk, ölüm, korku, umut ile ilgili duygularını, beklentilerini ifade etmek için bir araç olarak kullanıldığını ortaya koymaktadır; çünkü evin erkeği ava ya da savaşa girerken onlar dokuyorlardı. Dolayısıyla, kilimlerin kendine özgü "alt metinleri", kendi zenginlikleri, entelektüel, sanatsal, duygusal ve duyusal mesajlarıdır. Kilimler toplumun kültürel ve psikolojik birikimleridir. Geçmiş dönemlerin Türk kültürü ve aile yapısı hakkında bizi bilgilendirmeye yardımcı olabilirler. Kilimler, soyut sanatın en yaratıcı ve en derin düzeyde, kolektif düşüncelerin, deneyimin ve duyguların yorumlandığı ifadeler olarak görülmelidir. Bir motifin sabit bir anlamı olsa da değişik başka birçok yan anlamlar da içerebilir. Bu dolaylı anlamlar çoğunlukla benzerlikten çok kültürel kodlara dayalıdır. Motiflerin bazıları içinde yaşadığımız toplumda anlam bulmuştur, bazıları her kültürde aynı anlama gelir, bazısı ise sadece kişisel bir anlam taşır. Gerçek, aslında bir "işaret ve semboller sistemi" dir ve dünyanın bize gösterildiği gibi algılaması gerektiğini anlatır. Yaşamın tüm alanlarında gösterge adı verilen birimlere gereksinim vardır. Gösterge, herhangi bakımdan bir şeyin yerini tutan şey olarak tanımlanabilir. Tarihi dönemlerde oluşan semboller yaşamın içinde yer alan soyuta indirgenmiş nesnelerdir. Sembolik motif ise, bir şeyi simgeleyen veya bir düşünceyi uyandıran biçimlerdir. İşaret ettikleri anlamlarıyla gelenek ve göreneklerin, inançların ifadesidir. Çalışmada, bazı Anadolu kilim motiflerinden kuş, hayat ağacı, el, ibrik motiflerinin sembolik çözümlemeleri yapılarak, bu motiflerin dokuma içindeki alt metinleri, teknik ve sanatsal özellikleri açıklanacaktır.
Tekstillerde renk, doku, desen gibi yüzey etkilerini içeren görsel özelliklerinin oluşturulmasında sanat, tasarım, bilimden sağlanan bilgi birikimi etkin rol oynamaktadır. İç mekân tekstillerinin görsel özellikleri kullanılacağı mekânla doğrudan ilişkilidir. Dünyanın en çok sevilen moda ve ev mobilyası tasarımcılarından biri olan Laura Ashley, başlangıçta 1950'lerde mobilya malzemeleri yapmış, 1960'larda giyim tasarımına ve üretimi ile iş alanını genişletmiştir. Laura Ashley stili, çoğu zaman 19. yüzyıldan kalma bir kırsallık hissi ve doğal kumaşların kullanıldığı Romantik İngiliz tasarımlarının simgesi olmuştur. Dünyanın en çok sevilen moda ve ev mobilyası şirketlerinden Laura Ashley, mütevazi başlangıçlardan gelmiştir. Laura ve Bernard Ashley çifti, 1953'te Victoria ve Albert Müzesi'ndeki Kadın Enstitüsünün açtığı Geleneksel El Sanatları sergisinin ardından Londra'daki evlerinin mutfak masasında eşarp basarak bu işe başlarlar. Kumaş baskısı ile ilgili her şeyi öğrenmek için kütüphanelere gitmişler, bunun yanı sıra, şablon baskı, baskı boyaları ve keten kumaşlarla 10 sterlinlik bir yatırım yaparak, yeni heyecanla girişimlere başlamışlardı. İlk başta, küçük dairelerinde geometrik desenli küçük kumaşlar üretmişlerdi. Güncel modanın ana çizgilerinin dışında ürünler veren İngiliz tekstil tasarımcısı Laura Ashley, Kraliçe Victoria dönemindeki kadınsı siluet ve çiçek baskılı desenleriyle, moda, iç mekân, mobilya tasarımına yeni bir bakış getirmiştir. Laura Ashley'in en göze çarpan eseri, eşiyle birlikte kurduğu "Laura Ashley" moda ve ev dekorasyon markasıdır. Eşarp tasarımıyla başlayan bu serüven, 200 milyon pound değerinde bir ev içi üretim endüstrisine dönüşmüştür. Laura Ashley markası, bugün, çeşitli defalar zor süreçlerden ve zamanlardan geçmesine rağmen, Avrupa, ABD, Asya ve Avustralya'da hala faaliyet gösteren küresel bir şirkettir.
