This research paper aims to investigate the beliefs (perceptions) about distance education(DE) held by the faculty members of SultanQaboos Uuniversity (SQU) at the Sultanate of Oman as well as the differences between their beliefs (perceptions) with regards to gender, teaching experience, college academic rank, nationality, etc. This study used a questionnaire as a method of data collection. Findings of the study indicated statistically significant difference in terms of gender. Results show that female faculty members hold positive beliefs (perceptions) about the use of DE in learning and teaching whereas compared to their male colleagues. With regards to nationality, the study found statistically slight differences, wherein the Omani faculty members yielded higher scores on the positive statements and lower at the negative statements.Internet and or web based instruction. According to Zhang & Cui (2010) the elements of DE include separation of instructor and learner in space and occasionally also in time, use of educational media to link instructor and learner and carry course content provision of two-way communication between instructor and learner, and volitional control of learning by students rather than by the instructor. This study aims to identify the difficulties that faculty members at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) face and their impact on the quality of their teaching. Difficulties and obstacles are categorized into four groups: laboratories and teaching aids, academic promotion, administration and community service. It also aims to identify the statistically significant differences between faculty members according to the variables of age, gender, academic degree, teaching experience and nationality. The study population was (100) faculty members from four colleges at SQU, which are College of Education, Arts and Social Sciences, Engineering and College of Science. The study uses the questionnaire as a data collection tool. The results of this study show that there are statistically significant differences between faculty members with regard to laboratories and teaching aids attributed to the variables of gender, age and college. However, the study shows that there are no statistically significant differences between faculty members in terms of teaching experience. Finally, the study concludes with an important recommendation that will hopefully contribute to the enhancement of the quality of teaching, scientific research and community service at SQU.
يعتبر التوصيف الوظيفي هو الدليل الذي يرشد الموظف في مساره المهني ويعرفه بواجباته والمهام المطلوبة منه. هدفت هذه الدراسة التعرف على مدى تأثر المكتبة الرئيسة بجامعة السلطان قابوس بسلطنة عمان بالتغييرات التي تحدث في البيئة الرقمية فيما يتعلق بالتوصيف الوظيفي لأخصائيي المعلومات ولتحقيق أهداف الدراسة تم استخدام المنهج النوعي وتوصلت الدراسة إلى مجموعة من النتائج منها أن المكتبة الرئيسة تأثرت بالتغييرات التي تحدث في البيئة الرقمية وأن هذا التأثر شمل التحديث والتطوير في مهام أخصائي المعلومات بالأقسام المختلفة على مستويات مختلفة فهناك أقسام قامت بالتحديث و التطوير كليا في توصيفها الوظيفي ليتناسب مع التغيرات التي تحدث في البيئة الرقمية وأقسام لم تحدث في توصيفها الوظيفي وذلك نظرا لطبيعة المواد التي تعالجها أو لطبيعة الخدمة التي تقدمها وأقسام أخرى طورت وعدلت في بعض الوظائف لتتناسب مع التغيرات التي تحدث في البيئة الرقمية.
