İslam tarihinin ilk yüzyılları üzerine yapılan bazı çalışmalarda, savaşın (cihâd) ilan ve idare yetkisi üzerine halife ve din âlimleri arasında rekabet yaşandığı, zühtçülükleri nedeniyle sınırlara cihat yapmak üzere giden din âlimleri ve onların emrindeki gönüllü din savaşçılarının devletle hiçbir münasebetlerinin olmadığı ve bu gerilimin savaş liderliği ve hatta dini otoritenin halifeden hadis ilmiyle de ilgilenen bu zâhit-savaşçılara geçmesiyle sonuçlandığı iddia edilmektedir. Bu çalışmada, tarihsel verilerin böyle bir varsayımda bulunmak için yeterli olmadığı savunulmakta, iki taraf arasında savaşın ilan ve idaresi konusunda bir anlaşmazlık yaşanmadığı, aksine din âlimlerinin cihat doktrininde siyasi konjonktürü, yani aslında devletin ihtiyaçlarını dikkate alarak belirli revizyonlar yaptıkları ileri sürülmektedir.
Orta Çağ İslâm dünyasına ait pek çok kaynak türünde, geçmişte hüküm sürmüş hükümdarların biyografileri, hikmetli sözleri ya da siyaset anlayışları üzerinden dönemin yöneticilerine ahlâk ve iyi idare konulu çeşitli mesajlar verildiği görülür. Bu tür kayıtlarda dikkat çekici olan şey, sadece Müslüman hükümdarların değil aynı zamanda İslâm öncesinde hüküm sürmüş birçok Sâsâni hükümdarının da birer ahlâk ve fazilet timsali olarak sunulmasıdır. İlk Müslümanların Rum-İran savaşında ehl-i kitâb olmaları hasebiyle Bizans tarafını tutmaları, Emevileri Sâsâni [ve Bizans] imparatorluk modelini örnek aldıkları için zemmeden gelenek, siyaset ve şeriat arasında kurulan sıkı bağ ve en önemlisi Araplarla İranlılar arasındaki efdaliyet tartışmaları dikkate alındığında bu durum şaşırtıcı görünmektedir. Abbâsi, Saffâri, Sâmâni, Gazneli saraylarındaki Fars etkisi ve İran kökenli kâtip, tarihçi ve devlet adamları tarafından Fars edebiyatından Arapçaya yapılan tercümeler meseleyi izah etmeye yardımcı olmakta, ancak tam olarak açıklamaya yetmemektedir. Bu çalışmada Orta Çağ İslâm yazınında örnek siretiyle temayüz eden Sâsâni hükümdar tiplemesi kısaca tanıtılacak, ama asıl önemlisi yukarıda temas edilen hususlara rağmen Sâsâni hükümdarlarıyla ilgili güzel ahlâk ve iyi idare konulu rivayetlerin İslâm yazınında yaygınlık kazanmasının sebepleri tartışılacaktır.
Abbâsi halifesi Me'mûn (198-218/813-833), kendisini veliahtlıktan azlettiği için bir süredir savaşmakta olduğu kardeşi Emîn'i (193-198/809-813) yenilgiye uğrattıktan birkaç yıl sonra, İmâmiyye Şiasının sekizinci imamı Ali b. Mûsâ'yı, o sırada ikâmet ettiği Merv'e getirterek er-Rızâ lakabıyla veliaht tayin etmiş ve bu kararıyla yeni bir karışıklığa neden olmuştur. Bu çalışma Me'mûn'u böyle bir karar almaya götüren süreci ve iç savaş esnasında Emîn'in yanında yer almış olan Abbâsi ailesi ve Bağdat halkının bu karara gösterdikleri tepkiyi konu almaktadır. Makalede Me'mûn'un neden böyle bir girişimde bulunduğu sorusuna getirilen yorumlar değerlendirilmiş ve en olası saikler tartışılmıştır. Sünnî ve Şiî kaynaklarda yer alan kayıt ve rivayetlerin ışığında, Me'mûn'un Şiî bir imamı veliaht tayin edişinde dinî bir motivasyon aramak yerine, bu olayı belirli hedefleri olan siyasî bir planın parçası olarak görmek gerektiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

İhtilal hakkındaki rivayetlerin çeşitliliği ve kendi aralarındaki tezatlığı, konu üzerine çalışan tarihçilerin neden, nasıl ve kim sorularına bazen taban tabana zıt cevaplar vermelerine sebebiyet vermiştir. Öznur Özdemir'in 2019 tarihli doktora tezinin kitaplaştırılmış hâli olan çalışma, bu cevapları tartışma hedefiyle Abbâsî ihtilaline değil Abbâsî ihtilali tarihçiliğine odaklanmaktadır. Yazar burada Abbâsî ihtilalinin detaylı ve kronolojik bir anlatımını vermek yerine, onun hangi motivasyonla, hangi koşullar altında ve kimler tarafından gerçekleştirildiğine dair müstakil çalışmalar kaleme alan ya da fikir belirten Batılı tarihçilerin 1 görüşlerini belirli ekoller altında derleyip aralarındaki ortak noktalar ve farklılıkların bir dökümünü sunmayı, kendi deyimiyle Abbâsî ihtilali üzerinden bir tarihçilik haritası çıkarmayı amaçlamıştır.
