The aim of the study was to to assess the knowledge, attitude and awareness regarding teledentistry among dental students of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted among 200 dental students of a dental college & hospital in Kolkata. A self-administered structured questionnaire was circulated among the dental students and the completed questionnaires were statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics including percentages and Chi-square test. Results showed that majority of the respondents were of 18-25 years age[n=140(78.3%)] and gender distribution of sample was 81 males and 119 females. It was observed that knowledge, attitude and awareness were low among postgraduates when compared to first BDS, fourth BDS and interns. Most of the dental students agreed that teledentistry is a time saving approach(69%) but 38.5% said that it is not cost-effective. 42.5% of the participants responded neutrally for the statement that dental procedures can be done more accurately with the help of computers and intraoral camera and 45.5% agreed that teledentistry can help in dental tourism. It can be concluded from the study results that a fair knowledge, attitude and awareness exists regarding teledentistry, its benefits, applicability, and drawbacks among the dental students of Kolkata. In future, this budding technology could be incorporated in dentistry effectively by increasing campaigns/programs promoting teledentistry.
INTRODUCTIONThe teaching learning process in 2 nd year medical professional course is crucial; because this is the time the students are taught about patho-physiological concepts of diseases and their treatment and come across patients in the clinics. In short, learning in the 2 nd year professional students acts as a foundation on which a process of becoming a good professional is resting. Moreover, the curriculum and trends in medical education are changing rapidly. Needs of students are changing and role of educators is being redefined at the same time. One has to keep pace with the ever changing needs of the students and changing trends. So, if the needs of the students are considered while carrying out teaching, the process of teaching-learning can be made effective. So, we tried to find out the gaps, if any, by taking students' feedback, in the 2 nd professional medical students about their teaching and learning process in our subject (pharmacology) and sought suggestions from them for strengthening teaching and learning of pharmacology.Pharmacology is a medical science that forms a backbone of the medical profession as drugs form the corner stone ABSTRACT Background: The teaching learning process in 2 nd year medical professional course is crucial. Learning in the 2 nd year medical students acts as a foundation on which a process of becoming a good professional is resting. Pharmacology is a medical science that forms a backbone of the medical profession as drugs form the corner stone of therapy in human diseases. So, in order to assess the strength of the pharmacology curriculum and students' learning experience, collection of the students' feedback is important so that necessary reforms can be implemented for the betterment of teaching/learning of the subject. Objective of this questionnaire based study was conducted to determine the perceptions of 2 nd year medical professional students about various aspects of their teaching and learning, in order to make teaching more effective and enable students to learn better. Methods: This was a questionnaire based analytical study. The first part of the questionnaire contains respondent's general information. The second part of the questionnaire was in multiple choices format with a space for suggestions/remarks. The response was reviewed and analysis was done. Results: Out of total 180 students, 111 were able to complete the survey. Out of them 2 were not filled the first part of the questionnaire (respondent's general information). Out of 109 duly filled questionnaires 43 were males and 66 females and the mean age of the students was 20 years. Majority of the students found Pharmacology to be the most relevant and useful subject in further profession and future. About teaching learning media in understanding the subject in theory class majority of students preferred combination of chalk and board as well as power point presentation (PPT). Regarding the reforms to be made in the curriculum, majority of the students opined that group discussions should be introd...
Depression is considered as an affective disorder characterized primarily by change of mood. It is associated with significant socioeconomic problems, morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of major depression in the general population is estimated at 5% in world population. Prevalence ranges from 9% in ambulatory medical patients to 30% in hospitalized patients. According to the World Health report approximately 450 million people suffer from a mental or behavioral disorder, yet only a small minority of them receives even the most basic treatment. Currently, the available anti-depressant agents are associated with unwanted side effects and have their own limitations. An increasing number of herbal products have been introduced into psychiatric practice, as alternative or complementary medicines. The added advantages of indigenous medicinal treatment would include its complementary nature to the conventional treatment making latter safer, well tolerated and economical remedy for depressive disorders.
Background: Pain forms an integral part of many clinical conditions management is of great importance in every field of medicine. The core of medicine is to preserve and restore patient’s health and to minimize their suffering. Toxicodendron radicans (rhus toxicodendron) is a homoeopathic remedy with anti-inflammatory activity used for various arthritic pain. Rhus toxicodendron is commonly used in skin, mucus membrane affections, pain in joints, tendons, rheumatism in cold season, cellulitis and infection, fever. During the recent exponential rise in the use of alternative medicines and increasing integration into the health service little research has been done on alternative medicine in the context in which it is practiced. Methods: Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups. group 1 received control (normal saline), group 2 received vehicle (alcohol with distilled water in ratio 1:4), and group 3 received standard (diclofenac-10 mg/kg), group 4 and 5 consist of 2 test groups-rhus toxicodendron 30x and 200c respectively. Analgesic activity was assessed using Hot water tail immersion method and Eddy’s hot plate method. Preliminary pilot study was done with 4 doses rhus toxicodendron 6x, 12x, 30x, 200c respectively. Data was analysed by one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey Kramer multiple comparison test. P value <0.05 was considered as significant. Results: In Eddy’s hot plate method, rhus toxicodendron 30 showed increase in paw withdrawal time which was statistically very significant at the end of 1 hr compared to the control group whereas statistically rhus toxicodendron 200 showed extremely significant analgesic property. In hot water tail immersion method rhus toxicodendron 30 showed increase in tail withdrawal time at the end of 1hr compared to the control group which was significant statistically. Conclusions: This study shows that toxicodendron radicans homoeopathic formulations possess significant analgesic property.
