O presente texto observa o surgimento da polêmica enquanto espécie de produção literária no final do século XIX, fato que possibilitou o cenário literário brasileiro ser marcado por diversos conflitos entre intelectuais da época. A polêmica, dessa forma, se configurou como uma forma de propagação de ideias e levantamento de questionamentos sobre diversos temas que chamavam a atenção do público leitor. Tendo como ponto de partida a carta, a polêmica posteriormente era explicitada pelo seu principal veículo de divulgação, o jornal. Nota-se então, que a linguagem polemista no jornal aproximou a sociedade da literatura, uma vez que a mesma até então, era predominantemente elitista
