General cultural competency is considered as an integrative quality of a future engineer concerning his potential for self-realization in his future career. A text-oriented approach is used in developing the technology of the general cultural competency formation in the process of language education at a technical university. The correlation of a number of skills of general cultural competency with most textual skills developed in the process of language education allows to look upon textual activity as a developing medium for the formation of the targeted competency. The technology of its formation is characterized as a humanistic activity-oriented technology having developing and penetrating character and targeting the formation of a student's general cultural competency through his selfactualization in the process of textual activity. The variety of methods and forms of education involved in the textocentic technology implementation as well as the diversity of general cultural skills being developed in the process of textual activity are shown to be indicative of the multicomponent nature of the culture of textual activity itself -in keeping with cognition/language and communication/speech planes of a student's self-actualization in the process of language education. Textual activity being found useful in mastering different types of culture relevant for a student's self-actualization, the development and application of the textocentric technology of the general cultural competency formation are regarded as a meta-subject pedagogical task in the process of a future engineer's training.
General cultural competency is considered as an essential factor for the development of the student's personality and an important instrument of improving the quality of education. The relevance of the research is determined by the need to control the formation of general cultural competency, as one of the results of the educational process, and the lack of methods for assessing it at technical university. The article is aimed at solving a set of problems related to the control and assessment of the general cultural competency of students, with regard to the possibilities realized in the process of foreign language teaching at technical university. The study is carried out in line with the textocentric approach to the general cultural competency formation developed by the author. The ability of general cultural competency to be diagnosed is ensured by the proven correlation between a number of general cultural competency components formed in the foreign language classroom and textual skills of students. This correlation makes it possible to diagnose the general cultural competency of students on the basis of evaluating the results of their textual activity which dominates in the course of the foreign language teaching. Textocentric approach makes it possible to develop two methods of assessing general cultural competency described in the paper and testifying to its practical significance: express assessment which is relevant for classroom monitoring, and detailed diagnostics which meets the tasks of final examination of students. Text is characterized not only as the means of forming general cultural competency but also as the main means of assessing it. The prospects of using textocentric approach in the development of the assessment tools fund are linked to the ability of the approach to maintain the continuity of diagnosing general cultural competency at different stages of its formation under conditions of various types of control.
Communicative competency is considered to be an indispensible part of general cultural training of a graduate of the higher professional education system. The author undertakes the analysis of the definitions of the cultural competences as results of mastering the main syllabi stipulated by the federal state educational standards of the third generation, the aim being to determine the definitions correspondence to the notion of a specialist of a new type and to establish the interpretation of the cultural competency concept by the educational standards. The hopes of getting over the shortcomings of the federal state educational standards of the 3 and 3+ generations regarding the definitions of the expected results of the educational activity are pinned to maximum realization of the potential of language education having cultural competency as a true object of the pedagogical process.
The article offers a short review of the history of text studies undertaken by different branches of linguistic sciences and focuses on the possibilities of the text in the foreign language classroom aiming at the development of the students’ communicative competence. The text is characterized as a form of language units actualization, as structural and semantic entity giving an insight into the mechanism for sense integration in the processes of text production and comprehension. The text is also described as a base for the development of correlating receptive and productive skills of the students.
