pesquisaA crescente demanda por hortaliças de alta qualidade e ofertadas durante o ano todo tem contribuído para o investimento em novos sistemas de cultivo que permitam produção adaptada a diferentes regiões e condições adversas do ambiente. No Brasil, o cultivo de hortaliças em ambiente protegido, vem ganhando espaço entre os produtores, devido principalmente, à relativa facilidade em manejar as condições de cultivo quando comparado ao sistema convencional em campo aberto.A utilização do plástico na olericultura tem sido bastante empregada no Brasil, desde a década de 70, inicialmente com a cultura do morango (Goto, 1997 No que se refere às estruturas de proteção, as casas de vegetação permitem alterar o microclima de um determinado ambiente, viabilizando o cultivo de hortaliças em épocas desfavoráveis do ano (Martins et al., 1994), bem como ampliar o período de produção (Makishima e Carrijo, 1998), proporcionando maior produtividade e melhor qualidade de frutos (Loures et al., 1998). A busca de práticas que concentrem a produção sob estruturas de proteção na entressafra é importante para regularizar o abastecimento e obter preços mais elevados (Streck et al., 1998).Cultivos em substratos demonstram grande avanço frente aos sistemas de cultivo no solo, pois oferecem vantagens como o manejo mais adequado da água, o fornecimento de nutrientes em doses e épocas apropriadas, a redução do risco de salinização do meio radicular e a redução da ocorrência de problemas fitossanitários, que se traduzem em benefícios diretos no rendimento e qualidade dos produtos colhidos (Andriolo et al., 1999). O substrato deve apresentar algumas propriedades físicas e quí-micas intrínsecas importantes para sua utilização como, boa capacidade de retenção de água, na faixa de 1 a 5 kPa, alta disponibilização de oxigênio para as raízes, capacidade de manutenção da proporção correta entre fase sólida e lí-quida, alta capacidade de troca catiônica (CTC), baixa relação C/N entre outras (Martinez, 2002; Fernandez e Gomes, 1999; Martinez e Barbosa, 1999).A necessidade de se caracterizar produtos encontrados nas diferentes regiões do país e torná-los disponíveis como substrato agrícola é fundamental para RESUMOUm experimento com a cultura do tomate, foi instalado na Embrapa Hortaliças em Brasília, durante os anos de 2000 e 2001, para avaliar a produção do tomateiro em diferentes substratos e casas de vegetação. Os substratos utilizados foram casca de arroz, casca de arroz parcialmente carbonizada, fibra de coco verde, lã de rocha, maravalha, serragem e substrato para produção de mudas utilizado na Embrapa Hortaliças (150 L de terra de subsolo, 50 L de casca de arroz parcialmente carbonizada e 17 L de esterco de galinha). Os modelos de casas de vegetação utilizados foram teto em arco, arco com teto convectivo e capela.
