Für kosmetische Externa wurde ein Untersuchungsmodell entwickelt, welches mit realistischer Versuchsanordnung die optimale Konservierungsmittelkonzentration für unterschiedliche Emulsionstypen ermittelt. Dabei werden verschiedene Emulsionstypen, denen unterschiedliche Konzentration des zu prüfenden Konservierungsmittels zugesetzt wurden, mit Keimarten der Haut‐, der Fäkal‐, der Wasserflora und ubiquitären Saprophyten belastet. Während 21tägigen Stehens bei Zimmertemperatur werden jeweils nach 2, 3, 7, 10, 14 und 21 Tagen Proben gezogen, mit 1/15 M Phosphatpufferlösung bei 40° C verdünnt und in Nährböden mit und ohne Zusatz von Histidin und Tween 80 verimpft. Am Beispiel des Dimethoxans zeigt das Ergebnis der bei 4°, 20° und 37° C über 10 Tage bebrüteten Proben, daß so ein genauer Aufschluß über die Wirksamkeit eines Konservierungsmittels gewonnen wird, daß es jedoch notwendig ist, jeden einzelnen Emulsionstyp zu testen.
