This Paper elucidates the relative importance of soil structure and various compositional factors in influencing the liquid limit of natural kaolinitic soils. Earlier studies dealt with purified systems and anticipated that the liquid limit of the soils would increase with percentage clay size fraction and surface area, and that soils with a greater degree of particle flocculation would possess a higher liquid limit than soils with a more parallel particle arrangement. The results revealed that the inter-particle attraction and repulsion forces have a prominent role in determining the liquid limit of kaolinitic soils. These forces determine the particle arrangement (clay fabric) which in turn regulates the liquid limit values. The influence of clay fabric was ascertained from the relationships of liquid limit with shrinkage limit and sediment volume (in water) values. It was anticipated that kaolinitic soils with a greater degree of particle flocculation and a higher liquid limit would shrink less and occupy a higher sedimentation volume. As expected an increase in liquid limit was accompanied by an increase in shrinkage limit and sediment volume in water.
The time factor 2' and the degree of consolidation U relationship from Terzaghi's theory can be shown to be a rectangular hyperbola over the degree of consolidation range 6040%.In this Paper, the similarities between theoretical T/U versus T and experimental t/8 versus t plots (where t is the time and S is the compression) are used to present a simple method of determining the coeficient of consolidation. Many consolidation test results were analysed, and the values of the coefficients of consolidation obtained by the rectangular hyperbola method are seen to lie in between those obtained from the Taylor and Casagrande methods. Further, the rectangular hyperbola method provides a simpler method of predicting the magnitude of primary compression. The nondimensional slope of the t/8 versus t plot is a useful parameter in predicting the magnitude and time for primary compression.
The Paper reports the mechanisms controlling the Atterberg limits and compressibility characteristics of bentonite, homoionized with a series of monovalent, divalent and trivalent cations. An increase in cationic valency reduces the liquid limit and the compressibility of the clay material, while an increase in the hydrated ionic radius (for a constant valency) increases the liquid limit and compressibility. The size effect is more pronounced for the monovalent bentonites than for the divalent and trivalent clays. The influence of ionic size is explained qualitatively by the Stern model. In the potassium and ammonium bentonites, besides the relatively higher adsorption of cations in the Stern layer, the partial fixation of the cations in the hexagonal oxygen holes of the surface silicate layer also contributes to the marked changes in the properties studied. The consolidation rate and permeability are also significantly affected by the valency and size of the adsorbed cations. An increase in the valency of the adsorbed cations leads to quicker rates of consolidation and higher permeabilities, while, for a constant valency, an increase in the hydrated radius of the adsorbed cation results in a slower rate of consolidation and a lower permeability. Once again the size effect is more pronounced for the monovalent bentonites and is relatively small in the divalent and trivalent bentonites. The variations in the coefficient of secondary compression with cationic valency and size are similar to that noted for the compression index.
The present work investigates the influence of compositional factors on the liquid limit of montmorillonite soils. The results showed that the percent clay fraction and surface area values did not relate with the liquid limit of the soils; the latter, however, were essentially controlled by the diffuse double layer thickness. Examination of the relations between compositional factors that affect the double layer thickness and liquid limit showed that the latter did not have a significant bearing with cation exchange capacity, while a near perfect correlation was obtained with the amount of exchangeable sodium ions present. Such a dependence resulted because of the greater ease of dissociation of adsorbed sodium ions from the clay surface in presence of water and subsequent contribution to the double layer thickness; the other exchangeable cations, namely, calcium, magnesium, and potassium, were strongly adsorbed by the clay surface and did not contribute appreciably to the double layer thickness.
