Hughes conducted an internally-funded, four-month MILSATCOWGBS Utility Study that was completed in March, 1997. The purpose of the study was to quantify the military utility of varying levels of highpower, wide-bandwidth global broadcast systems within the overall communications architecture during the 1999-2010 timeframe. We examined the impact of adding varying amounts of GBS capability to the communications future military architecture (including both terrestrial and space-based elements). Specific topics were to: Identi3 and quantify measures of utility and 8 Identifv how to best use the capability. Assess which information is most use&l and the impact qf faster delivery. Determine the impact of diyerent operating conditions; e.g. Peacetime, Mq-or Theater War, multiple lesser regional conflcts.
