2018 року науковому фаховому виданню «Біофізичний вісник» виповнюється двадцять років. Розвиток міждисциплінарних біофізичних досліджень наприкінці минулого сторіччя в Україні потребував створення спеціалізованого наукового журналу і 1998 року за ініціативою харківських біофізиків було засновано нову серію Вісника Харківського університету-«Біофізичний вісник» як періодичне наукове фахове видання України в галузі фізико-математичних наук. Метою журналу стала публікація статей, повідомлень та оглядів, які містять оригінальні результати вирішення фізико-математичних проблем, що відносяться до біологічних систем різного рівня організації, методами експериментальної і теоретичної фізики та математичного моделювання. Журнал був розрахований на науковців, викладачів, аспірантів, студентів, що працюють у галузі біофізики та суміжних областях. 1999 року на обкладинці журналу вперше з'явилася назва англійською-«Biophysical bulletin». 2006 року «Біофізичний вісник» отримав Свідоцтво про державну реєстрацію як вітчизняне наукове видання, засновником якого є Харківський національний університет імені В.Н. Каразіна. Тематична спрямованість журналу згідно з Свідоцтвом-публікація результатів досліджень в галузі біофізики та медичної фізики, вирішення фізико-математичних проблем, що відносяться до біологічних систем різного рівня організації. Мови публікацій-українська, російська та англійська. 2009 року «Біофізичний вісник» отримав власний ISSN для друкованої версії (ISSN 2075-3810 (print), а також ISSN для електронної версії журналу (ISSN 2075-3829 (online)), за якими було закріплено транслітеровану назву «Bìofìzičnij Vìsnik» та скорочення «Bìofìz. Vìsn.», а також паралельну назву «Biophysical bulletin» (https://portal.issn.org/resource/ISSN/2075-3829). Першим головним (відповідальним) редактором «Біофізичного вісника» став один з ініціаторів його створення д.ф.-м.н., проф. Малєєв В. Я. Відповідальними секретарями стали к.ф.-м.н., доц. Стьопін Л. Д. та к.б.н., доц. Гаташ С. В. До складу редакційної колегії увійшли д.ф.-м.н.
