Design of an acceleration measurement system using a MEMS accelerometer to measure acceleration of automobiles in all the three axes is presented. Electronic stability control and anti-lock breaking systems in automobiles use the acceleration measurements to offer safety in driving. The system uses an ARM microcontroller to quantize the outputs of accelerometer and save the measurement data on a microSD card. A LabVIEW program has been developed to analyze the longitudinal acceleration measurement data and test the measurement system. Random noises generated and added with measurement data during measurement are filtered by a Kalman filter implemented in LabVIEW. Longitudinal velocity of the vehicle is computed from the measurement data and displayed on a graphical chart. Typical measurement of velocity of a vehicle at different accelerations and decelerations is presented.
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology has become the key technology to all innovative and novel wireless applications because of its low cost and deployment simplicity. This paper presents a low cost ZigBee based WSN implementation for indoor position monitoring in a home automation application. The real-time knowledge of the location of personnel, assets, and portable instruments can increase home automation control efficiency. Position monitoring otherwise called as location estimation is the process of obtaining location information of a node with respect to a set of known reference positions. Different radio propagation models and localization techniques are discussed. Low cost Digi XBee PRO modules are deployed for location estimation using trilateration method inside a home and mean displacement error value is reported for the same. The application programs have been developed in python language using simple AT commands. The hardware and software framework and related programming are discussed in this paper.
A design of Controller Area Network (CAN) based longitudinal velocity measurement system using MEMS accelerometer and GPS receiver is presented. CAN is a serial communication protocol which efficiently supports distributed control system with high level of security. The system consists of a master node and a slave node built around LPC1768 and LPC2129 microcontrollers respectively. The master and slave nodes are linked with CAN bus. The slave node gets velocity data from GPS receiver and transfers to the master node. The master node samples the accelerometer output, and saves the sampled data and the velocity data received from the slave node on a microSD card. A LabVIEW program has been developed to study the measured parameters in offline by applying a Kalman filter and computing the estimate of longitudinal velocity. Typical measurements with the present system in a standard driving maneuvers and computation of estimate of longitudinal velocity using the LabVIEW program are presented. The measurement system produces comparable results with the conventional meter.
Computing the efficiency of flat-plate collector is vital in solar thermal system testing. This paper presents the design of ZigBee enabled data acquisition system for instantaneous flat-plate collector efficiency calculation. It involves measurement of parameters like inlet and outlet fluid temperatures, ambient temperature and solar radiation intensity. The designed system has a base station and a sensor node. ZigBee wireless communication protocol is used for communication between the base station and the sensor node for wireless data acquisition. The wireless sensor node which is mounted over the collector plate includes the necessary sensors and associated signal-conditioners. An application program has been developed on LabVIEW platform for data acquisition, processing and analysis and is executed in base station PC. Instantaneous flat-plate collector efficiency is computed and reported.
