Although the Constitution of India has framed strict rules to abolish ‘untouchability’ and given equality of status and opportunity to all the individuals, yet there are millions of people in the country who face inhuman treatment and perpetual humiliation at the hands of other people. This study looks into the effects of scavenging work on scavengers from an environmental perspective. In particular, we study the socio-economic conditions of scavengers in Erode Municipal Corporation. Using primary data analysis, we find that scavengers in the study area still have a deplorable socio-economic condition and are suffering a lot due to the caste system.
