We investigated the ability of carbohydrates, glycosidases, and concanavalin A to inhibit the stimulation of the human leukocyte oxidative burst by gonococci in the absence of serum. The gonococci used in this study contained protein II (P.II) outer membrane proteins, and neutrophil oxidative burst was measured by luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence (CL). The following carbohydrates inhibited CL induced by nonpiliated MATERIALS AND METHODS Gonococci. Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains were maintained by daily transfer on GC medium base (Difco Laboratories, Detroit, Mich.) with supplements, as described previously 116
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
