AbstractAn analysis approach is described which includes the effects of rock fabric strength anisotropy on wellbore instability. When drilling in geologically complex conditions -shown to be commonplace in the Andean foothills of South Americabedding-plane slippage, resulting from an unfavourable interaction between in-situ stresses, the well trajectory and bedding, is shown to cause severe instability for certain well trajectories. Case-history examples from the Pedernales field (Venezuela) and Cusiana field (Colombia) are presented which confirm the analytical predictions.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
