The paper presents the capabilities of China's GF-1 satellite for the detection of forest defoliation caused by Hyphantria cunea in the border region between Tianjin City and Hebei Province of China in 2013 to support ground surveys and designing sample plot inventories. We compared the spectral bands with those of Landsat-8 and come to the conclusion that GF-1 images are suitable for the envisaged task even if it is of fact that no shortwave infrared channel is available.
