Values are desirable cognitive elements within the framework of goals and principles that serve as a guide in the lives of people.. In this respect, it can be said that the politics which addresses the values that are among the determinants of our preferences also affect our political preferences. Scientists regard values as the basic principles and main principles of political ideologies and the scientists define that values are used to make decisions about political issues, in order to determine and legitimize political decisions, and to create a climate of discussion about politics. Thus, it is important to analyze the relationship between values, politics and political preferences. 24th June 2018 was determined as the subject of the study becasue this date is an important breaking moment in Turkish politic history. 24th June 2018 Presidential system elections are significant because it is an election that replaces the current parliamentary system which was on process from 1921, to a system based on party presidency. In this study, Twitter dicourses of the candidates who took place in the presidential elections of June 24, 2018 were evaluated in the context of Schwartz's Values Theory. In the study, it was taken into consideration the 1-month period before the election, when the political communication activities were concentrated and tweets of the candidates between 23 May 2018 and 23 June 2018 were archived from the official Twitter accounts. In the research, qualitative content analysis was used as the research method. The statements of presidential candidates on Twitter were examined in terms of values and the values which were referred by candidates in their discourses in order to respond the expectations of the voters. In this study, it was pointed whether there are any values differences in the discourses of the politic actors who win or lost the elections. When the findings are analyzed in the study , it has been observed that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who is the winner of elections, has made the most references to "choosing own goals" , "succeed" and "social power" values. As a result of analyzes, during 24 June 2018 elections, it has been observed that "succeed","choosing own goals" , "wealth", "honesty" , "freedom", "national security" and "social power" values were standed out in discourses of candidates.
Bu çalışma, millet iradesiyle iktidarın değiştiği ilk seçim olarak Türkiye siyasi tarihine geçen 14 Mayıs 1950 seçimini konu edinmektedir. Çalışmanın amacı bu önemli seçimde siyaset söylemine egemen olan değerleri ortaya çıkarmaktır. Dönemin iktidar partisi konumundaki CHP ve muhalefet partisi konumundaki DP'li siyasal aktörlerin dönem gazetelerinde yer alan konuşmaları değerler açısından incelenmiştir. İçerik analizi yöntemiyle yapılan araştırmada analiz kategorileri olarak, Schwartz Değer Ölçeği'ndeki temel ve üst düzey değer boyutları kullanılmıştır. Bu yolla CHP ve DP'li siyasal aktörlerin seçmeni ikna etmek için hangi beklenti ve değerlere seslendikleri ve dönem siyasetinin egemen değer öncelikleri belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Analiz sonucunda 1950 seçiminde siyasal aktörlerin söylemlerinde en sık kullanılan değerlerin kendini yönetme, başarı, yardımseverlik, güvenlik, güç ve evrensellik temel değerleri olduğu saptanmıştır. CHP ve DP'li aktörlerin söylemleri temel değerler açısından karşılaştırıldığında, her iki partinin benzer değerleri öne çıkardıkları ancak öncelikler sıralamasının farklı olduğu görülmüştür.
Values are socio-psychological elements that serve as guidance in evaluating events and choosing between options. Values, which are an important factor in preference and choice making, are also associated with the political decision-making process. Because in political activities, every discourse put forward by political actors covers values, and voters carry out their political choices in consideration of those values. For this reason, the 23rd June 2019 Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality election was determined as the subject of the study. The election of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, where there was great competition in the 31 March 2019 local elections, was canceled due to irregularities in the election committee and it was decided to renew the elections on 23 June 2019.The 23 June 2019 election have become one of the most important elections in Turkish political history due to a renewed election and a fierce competition between the candidates. In the study, the discourses made by the two candidates, Binali Yıldırım and Ekrem İmamoğlu, who obtained the majority of the votes in the elections held on 23 June 2019, were analyzed within the framework of Schwartz Values Theory. In this study, the period of one month before the election, in which political communication studies are concentrated, is taken into consideration. The political communication activities were intensified and the one-month period before the election was taken into consideration and the political discourses of the candidates on the official Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages between May 22 and June 22, 2019 were archived. However, the Facebook and Twitter posts of the candidates were found to be identical in both quantity and quality and the analysis was limited to the discourse of Twitter and Youtube. In the research, qualitative content analysis was used as the research method. The discourses of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality candidates on Twitter and YouTube were examined in the context of values, and the values that were prominent in the discourse of the candidates and the values that won or lost the election were tried to be revealed. As a result of the analyzes, Ekrem İmamoğlu, who won the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality election on 23 June 2019, was found to be the most cited values for determining his own purposes, being responsible, social justice, honesty, social power, success and equality. It was observed that the other candidate Binali Yıldırım was constructing his discourses on the values of selfdetermination, protecting public image, being successful, social power, social justice and honesty. Although no major differences were observed in the values cited by the candidates in the 23 June 2019 Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality election, it was found that there were various discourse differences in providing functionality to related values.
