Despite the publication of a recent meta-analysis of elastography in thyroid nodules, further work is necessary on this issue in different populations. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the clinical value of elastography on nodular goiters in mild iodine-deficient regions without excluding patients according to nodule characteristics. This prospective study was conducted between April 2010 and December 2011 in Yıldırım Beyazıt Dıskapı Research Hospital Endocrinology outpatient clinic. Five hundred twenty-eight nodular goiter patients who underwent thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsy were included in our study. Elastography scores and indexes were measured with real-time ultrasound elastography (Hitachi® EUB 7000 HV machine with 13 MHz linear transducer). There were 471 females and 57 males and their ages ranged from 45 years to 78 years. A total of 601 nodules were evaluated in these patients. The area under the curve (AUC) for the elasto score was 0.91 (p < 0.0001) and AUC for the strain index (SI) was 0.96 (p < 0.0001). We suggest that the SI reflects malignancy better than the elasto score. We conclude that elastography scores greater than 3 have 76% sensitivity and 96% specificity for diagnosing malignancy. For SI, we conclude that 3.75 (83% sensitivity and 95% specificity) is the cutoff point. Elasto score and SI measurements of thyroid nodules in our population are efficient and increase the diagnostic performance of the sonography.

Neurofibromatosis (NF) type 1, also known as von Recklinghausen's disease, is an autosomal-dominant inherited disorder. Some tumors may develop in these patients, including optic pathway gliomas, astrocytomas, brainstem gliomas, chronic myeloid leukemia, and rhabdomyosarcoma. Patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 show also an increased risk of endocrine tumors, especially pheochromocytomas, whereas thyroid carcinoma is very rare. It is also rare for a neurofibroma to arise in the tissue neighboring the thyroid gland, and mimicking a nonfunctional thyroid nodule. This report presents a case of a neurofibroma adherent to the thyroid gland with thyroid papillary carcinoma in a 26-year-old woman with NF type 1.

The effects of rosemary powder, rosemary extract and α‐tocopherol, and their combinations, on color, chemical and microbiological quality of Turkish sucuk during ripening and storage periods were investigated. The combination of 500 ppm rosemary extract and 500 ppm tocopherol had the highest antioxidant activity while the control group had the lowest antioxidant activity. The 500 ppm rosemary extract and 500 ppm tocopherol addition preserved color better than any other treatment. The multiplicative product of strong ripening time, antioxidant treatment interaction – storage time and antioxidant treatment interaction (P < 0.0001) existed for 2‐thiobarbituric acid‐reactive substances content. Microbiological properties were improved by antioxidant treatment with the best microbiological quality observed for sucuks having the 500 ppm rosemary extract and 500 ppm tocopherol. To preserve overall color, chemical and microbiological quality of sucuks during storage time, the rosemary extract and tocopherol combination can be used for the commercial processing of Turkish sucuks. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Turkish sucuk is a popular and relatively high‐fat‐content (up to 40%) processed meat product. Since fat in the Turkish sucuk's formula is prone to lipid oxidation, using natural antioxidants such as rosemary extract and tocopherol may have important implications for sucuk processors. Moreover, Turkish sucuk is a raw‐fermented processed meat product and natural antioxidants may also extend its microbiological life by minimizing food safety problems associated with uncooked processed meat products. To sum up, our study proving the efficacy of using natural antioxidant in Turkish sucuk processing may increase market share of Turkish sucuks.

In this study, tin oxide (SnO2) nanoparticles were synthesized by hydrothermal method in the presence of hydrazine and ammonia by adding surfactant for 12 h in a Teflon autoclave at 100• C reaction temperature. Tin(II) chloride hydrate as an inorganic precursor, hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), and tetrapropyl ammonium bromide (TPAB) as cationic, and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) as anionic surfactants were used. The results showed that the size and shape of nanoparticles depended on the surfactant types. The nanoparticles sizes between 17.5 and 19.7 nm were obtained by changing types of surfactants. Synthesized tin oxide nanoparticles were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
