Objective:To evaluate the effect of pan-retinal photocoagulation with Pattern Scan Laser (pascal)on best corrected visual acuity and central macular thickness in patients having proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).Methods:This study was conducted at AFIO, Rawalpindi, Pakistan from Oct 2014 to Jul 2015. Sixty seven eyes of 46 patients having proliferative diabetic retinopathy were included in the study. All patients underwent ophthalmic clinical examination including uncorrected distant visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), fundus examination with slit lamp and optical coherence tomography to document the pretreatment central macular thickness (CMT). Two sessions of PRP using Pattern Scan Laser were performed 04 weeks apart and OCT was repeated 04 weeks after the 2nd session. Central macular thickness and BCVA were documented.Results:Sixty seven eyes of 46 patients (29 females and 17 males) with mean age of 57.45 ± 5.78 years underwent treatment with two sessions of laser PRP. Mean pretreatment BCVA was 0.67 ± 0.43 and mean post-treatment BCVA was 0.57 ± 0.3. Mean central macular thickness (CMT)as measured by OCT was 391.93 ± 170.43 before treatment and 316.91 ± 90.42 um after treatment. The magnitude of induced change in CMT after treatment was 75.01 ± 90.75 and BCVA was 0.09 ± 0.14.Conclusion:Laser PRP with Pattern scan laser alone in patients with combined presentation of PDR and DME is safe and effective.
Objectives: To review the visual outcomes after cataract surgery in a tertiary care teaching hospital, Isra University Hyderabad. Methods: This retrospective clinical study was carried out for six months at Isra University Hyderabad from December 2020-May 2021. Total patients included were 982. The data comprised of patients who underwent cataract surgery from Sept 2018 – Aug 2020. Individuals over 40 years were included and who returned for out-patient appointments. Visual acuity before and six weeks after cataract surgery were noted and categorized according to World Health Organization criteria (i-e Good, Moderate and Poor).. Data analysis was done with the help of SPSS version 22.0. Results: Out of 982 patients who underwent Phacoemulsification at Isra University Hospital, the operated eyes were 483 right and 499 left respectively. Meanwhile, 966 had good visual acuity six weeks after the surgery, while 16 had moderate visual acuity noted after six weeks. Objective: To observe efficacy of Timolol maleate 0.5% by topical and surface application in infantile superficial capillary hemangioma of eyelid. Methods: This multi-centered clinical case series was carried out at Ophthalmology Department of Bilawal Medical College and Institute of Ophthalmology, LUMHS, Jamshoro from November 2019 to May 2020. We included 14 subjects. All the patients were subjected to detailed clinical examination. Before starting the topical beta blockers, the enrolled subjects had obtained the expert opinion by pediatrician to rule out any preexisting developmental cardio vascular disease. Topical beta blockers 0.5% drops were thus started with, against the ongoing finding of superficial capillary hemangioma of eyelid. Results: There was significant regression in size of infantile hemangioma after treating with topical timolol maleate 0.5%. We included 14 subjects in this study. Mean±SD age of patients was 4.94. Complete regression was seen in 08 subjects at the end of 12 weeks (64%) while 03 were completely cured at 08 weeks (21%) and 01 patient lost follow up with us. No significant ocular and systemic side effects were noted. A case of 46-year-old male is presented who came with complaints of painless, progressive deterioration of vision in both eyes and he was using Latanoprost and Cosopt eye drops in both eyes. His visual acuity was 6/60 in right eye and perception of light in left eye. The intraocular pressures were 28 mm Hg (OD) and 18 mm Hg (OS). There was iridocorneal adhesion and posterior embryotoxon in his right eye and leucoma in left eye. Cup-disc ratio was 0.7. He had hypodontia, midface hypoplasia, hypertelorism, and telecanthus. Family history was also positive. His sister also had iris stromal hypoplasia along with posterior embryotoxon. A diagnosis of Axenfeld Rieger Syndrome was made The patient underwent glaucoma drainage devise (AGV) surgery in his right eye. Post operative pressures were 10mm Hg. He was later referred to maxillofacial surgeon, cardiologist and counseled for avoiding cross marriages to prevent this inherited disease
Orbital foreign bodies are not only difficult to detect but if retained for a long time can cause drastic complications such as orbital cellulitis, damage to extra ocular muscles and optic nerve injury. A prompt diagnosis and earlier removal can minimize the complication rate. Complications vary according to size, site and type of foreign body. Retained foreign bodies are very difficult to diagnose especially of wooden type even with advanced imaging techniques. We report a case of intra orbital wooden foreign body which was present for three months in a young boy.
