A new set of luminescent platinum(II) diimine complexes has been synthesized and characterized. The anionic ligands in these complexes are arylacetylides. The complexes are brightly emissive in fluid solution with relative emission quantum yields phiem ranging from 3 x 10(-3) to 10(-1). Two series of complexes have been investigated. The first has the formula Pt(Rphen)(C...CC6H5)2 where Rphen is 1,10-phenanthroline substituted in the 5-position with R = H, Me, Cl, Br, NO2, or C...CC6H5, while the second has the formula Pt(dbbpy)(C=CC6H4X)2 where dbbpy = 4,4'-di(tert-butyl)bipyridine and X = H, Me, F, or NO2. From NMR, IR, and electronic spectroscopies, all of the complexes are assigned a square planar coordination geometry with cis-alkynyl ligands. The crystal structure of Pt(phen)(Ce-CC6H4CH3)2 confirms this assignment. All of the complexes exhibit an absorption band at ca. 400 nm that corresponds to a Pt d-->pi*diimine charge-transfer transition. The variation of lambdamax for this band with substituent variation supports this assignment. From similar changes in the energy of the solution luminescence as a function of substituents R and X, the emissive excited state is also of MLCT origin, but with spin-forbidden character on the basis of excited-state lifetime measurements (0.01-5.6 micros). The complexes undergo electron-transfer quenching, showing good Stern-Volmer behavior using 10-methylphenothiazine and N,N,N',N'-tetramethylbenzidine as reductive quenchers. Excited-state reduction potentials are estimated on the basis of a simple thermochemical analysis. Two series of 2,5-dipyridyl- and 2,5-dithienylphosphole derivatives containing sigma3- or sigma4-P atoms were prepared, and their optical (UV/Vis absorption, fluorescence spectra) and electrochemical properties were systematically evaluated. These physical properties depend mainly on the natures of the 2,5-substituents and of the phosphorus moiety, and they revealed that these compounds contain extended pi-conjugated systems. Structure-property relationships were established on the basis of these experimental data and ab initio calculations on the parent molecules. The limited aromatic character and low-lying LUMO of the phosphole ring appear to be crucial for achieving a highly delocalised pi system. Electrooxidation of 2,5-dithienylphosphole derivatives affords electroactive films with low optical band gaps. As observed for the corresponding monomers, the optical and electrochemical properties of the polymers can be varied over a wide range by modifying the nature of the phosphorus moiety.

Room temperature phosphorescence has been observed in a synthetically facile Pt(II) complex, Pt(dbbpy)(CtriplebondC-pyrene)(2) (dbbpy = 4,4'-di(tert-butyl)-2,2'-bipyridine; CtriplebondC-pyrene = 1-ethynylpyrene), in fluid solution. The static and time-resolved absorption and luminescence data are consistent with phosphorescence emerging from the appended CtriplebondC-pyrenyl units following excitation into the low energy dpi Pt --> pi* dbbpy metal-to-ligand charge transfer absorption bands.

A series of photoactive dyads bearing pyrene and metal (M Ru II ) or Os II ) tris(2,2'-bipyridine) terminals bridged by an ethynylene or Pt II bis(sacetylide) moiety has been synthesized and investigated by transient spectroscopy. Selective excitation into the terminal metal complex is possible in each case and generates the lowest energy, excited triplet state localized on that molecular fragment. For both Os II -based dyads, the triplet state is unperturbed by the appended pyrene unit and the observed photophysical properties can be understood within the framework of the energy-gap law. The triplet state localized on the metal complex in the two Ru II -based dyads is involved in reversible energy transfer with the triplet associated with the pyrene unit, which is situated at slightly lower energy. When the terminal metal complex is a Ru II bis(2,2':6',2''-terpyridyl) fragment, however, the triplet levels are inverted such that the pyrene-like triplet state lies slightly above that of the metal complex. Kinetic spectrophotometry has allowed determination of the various rate constants and energy gaps and, on the basis of nonadiabatic electron-transfer theory, it appears that the central Pt bis(sacetylide) unit is a much inferior electronic conductor than is a simple ethynylene group. Reversible energy transfer of this type greatly prolongs the triplet lifetime of the Ru II tris(2,2'-bipyridyl) fragment. For example, equilibration between the triplet states is achieved within 10 ps for the ethynylenebridged dyad while the equilibrium mixture decays with a lifetime of about 40 ms in deoxygenated acetonitrile at room temperature.

A donor−chromophore−acceptor triad (D−C−A) in which the chromophore is a Pt diimine bis(acetylide) moiety (red), the donor is phenothiazine (blue), and the acceptor is nitrophenyl (green) has been synthesized and studied spectroscopically. Irradiation leads to a charge-separated state that has a 70 ns lifetime as measured by transient absorption spectroscopy.

The photophysical, electrochemical, and optoelectronic properties of conjugated systems incorporating dibenzophosphole or phosphole moieties are described. Dibenzophosphole derivatives are not suitable materials for OLEDs due to their weak photoluminescence (PL) in the solid state and the instability of the devices. Variation of the substitution pattern of phospholes and chemical modification of their P atoms afford thermally stable derivatives, which are photo- and electroluminescent. Comparison of the optical properties of solution and thin film of thioxophospholes shows that these compounds do not form aggregates in the solid state. This property, which is also supported by an X-ray diffraction study of three novel derivatives, results in an enhancement of the fluorescence quantum yields in the solid state. In contrast, (phosphole)gold(I) complexes exhibit a broad emission in thin film, which is due to the formation of aggregates. Single- and multilayer OLEDs using these P derivatives as the emissive layer have been fabricated. The emission color of these devices and their performances vary with the nature of the P material. Interestingly, di(2-thienyl)thiooxophosphole is an efficient host for the red dopant DCJTB, and devices using the gold complexes have broad emission spectra.
