II. INTRODUCTIONHE Texas power market is experiencing transition from the current zonal market structure to a nodal structure. The transition requires significant changes to processes and systems involved in the business activities of ERCOT, the ISO for the region. In the upcoming nodal market, the processes which are either new or will replace the current one include DAM, RUC, SCED and CRR [1]. In order to support this new paradigm, ERCOT is making efforts to update its IT infrastructure. The major IT systems being updated or created include EMS, MMS, NMMS, CRR, MIS, COMS and EDW. These individual systems will work collaboratively as tools and platforms for ERCOT and Market Participants to run the market reliably and economically. The traditional role of an EMS system is to monitor, analyze and control power grids from a security perspective. As one of the core components of the IT infrastructure for the nodal market, the EMS system will play a critical role in maintaining the reliability and security of the ERCOT System. Beyond this primary role, the EMS system also supports several market-facing systems to perform their functions. It aids the MMS system in DAM, RUC and SCED, and provides data to the MIS system for ERCOT System information posting and to the COMS system for market settlement. This paper discusses the roles of the EMS system in Texas Nodal Power Market. The paper not only introduces the EMS functions which address the security perspective of the ERCOT System, but also explains how the EMS system supports several market-facing systems including MMS, MIS and COMS. Section III introduces the sub-systems and functions of the EMS system and provides an overview of MMS, MIS and COMS systems. Section IV presents the role of the EMS system in aiding DAM and RUC of the MMS system. Section V details the role of the EMS system in interacting with SCED of the MMS system as well as Market Participants in Real Time Operations. Section VI describes the role of the EMS system in supporting the MIS system and COMS system. Section VII concludes the paper.
