Background Providing a holistic nursing care approach and meeting patients’ satisfaction has become a major health service performance indicator globally. Despite a number of efforts to improve patient satisfaction with nursing care, the practice is still insufficient to meet the required standard in the developing world including Ethiopia. Accordingly, this study was initiated to identify the gaps in adult patient satisfaction with inpatient nursing care practice in Eastern Amhara region, Ethiopia. Objective To assess the determinants of patient satisfaction with inpatient nursing care among public hospitals in Eastern Amhara region, northeastern Ethiopia. Methods A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted between June 5, 2020 and July 4, 2020 in three public hospitals in the eastern region of Amhara. Systematic random sampling technique was used to recruit 244 participants from the sampled study. Newcastle Satisfaction with the Nursing Scale was used for data collection. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association and a P <0.05 was deemed to be significant. Results The overall proportion of admitted patient satisfaction with nursing care was 118 (48.4%). Besides, the capability of nurses at their job was the highest nursing care satisfaction parameter, 133 (54.5%), while nurse’s awareness of patients’ needs was the lowest parameter, 43 (17.6%), according to this study. Having primary education (AOR=8.575; 95% CI: 1.770, 14.532), being a farmer by occupation (AOR=3.702; 95% CI=1.047–13.087), and having a health insurance scheme (AOR=5.621; 95% CI=1.489–11.213) were the important predictors for patient satisfaction with inpatient nursing care. Conclusion The overall patient satisfaction with nursing care in this study was found to be sub-standard and needs a great deal of effort. It is recommended that employees shall be included in the health insurance package.
Introduction Nurses are the frontline force for patient care, and nursing professionalism is a key tool for quality of care. Nursing professionalism and its characteristics should be defined in accordance with the current system. Objective To determine the level of professionalism in nursing and its associated factors in the South Wollo Public Hospital, Northeast Ethiopia. Methods A multicenter hospital-based cross-sectional study design was used in South Wollo Zone Public Hospitals from March to April 2022, with 357 nurses selected using a simple random sampling method. Data were collected using a pretested questionnaire, then entered and analyzed using EpiData 4.7 and SPSS 26. Finally, predictors of nursing professionalism were identified using a multivariate logistic regression. Result Of the 350 respondents, 179 (51.1%) were women and 171 (48.9%) were men, with 68.6% displaying high levels of professionalism. Being women (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.93, 95% CI [1.718, 5.000]), having a positive self-image (AOR = 2.96, 95% CI [1.421, 6.205]), having a good organizational culture (AOR = 3.16, 95% CI [1.587, 6.302]), being a member of the nursing association (AOR = 1.95, 95% CI [1.137, 3.367]), and nurses who were satisfied with their job were significantly associated with nursing professionalism. Conclusion In this study, the level of nursing professionalism was encouraging but needed more effort. Furthermore, sex, self-image, organizational culture, nursing association membership, and job satisfaction were positive predictors of nursing professionalism. As a result, hospital administrations consider factors that maintain a pleasant institutional working environment to foster a positive self-image and increase job satisfaction.
Background Pregnancy and childbirth-related deaths have become a global public health issue and the burden is more prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. While several attempts have been made to minimize maternal mortality, the practice of birth preparedness and complication readiness is still inadequate in Ethiopia. As a result, this study was initiated to identify the gaps in birth preparedness and complication readiness practice in Southwest Ethiopia. Objective Aimed to assess the magnitude of birth preparedness, anticipated complication practices, and associated factors among recently delivered women in Mizan-Aman Town, southwestern Ethiopia, 2019. Methods A community-based cross-section study was conducted on 491 recently delivered mothers between May and June 2019. A multistage sampling technique was employed and data were collected via face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire. The result was analyzed via SPSS version 25 and binary logistic regression was used to determine the association. Finally, the results were deemed significant when the P-value was <0.05. Results Out of 491 mothers, only 109 (22.2%) of respondents were well prepared for birth and its complications. Having a history of stillbirth 3.646 (AOR: 95% CI: 1.72, 5.65), being informed the term BP/CR from their friends 3.05 (AOR: 95% CI: 1.04, 8.89), being aware of pregnancy danger signs 2.82(AOR: 95% CI: 1.21,6.57) and being aware of two out of four postpartum danger signs 3.571(AOR: 95% CI: 1.511,8.443) were found to be important predictors of birth preparedness and its complication practice. In addition, having infants birth order between 4–6 and being a housewife mother by occupation were considered as protective factors. Conclusions and Recommendations The status of birth preparedness and its complication was found to be low in this study and, therefore, intensive awareness-raising and promotion activities shall be implemented at the community and health facility level.
Background Suboptimal breastfeeding practices have remained a global public health issue, particularly in Ethiopia due to early days of newborn breastfeeding practices. Although several measures have been taken to comply with the WHO guidelines, newborn feeding malpractices are widely seen in Ethiopia. Objective To assess the prevalence and determinant of early days of newborn feeding malpractices among recently delivered women in Mizan-Aman Town, southwestern Ethiopia, 2020. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study of recently delivered women was conducted between March 5/2020 and April 8/2020. A total of 487 mother-to-child (<12month) pairs were selected using a multi-stage randomized sampling technique and the data were collected through a face-to-face interview using a structured questionnaire. The result was analyzed via SPSS version 26. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess the determinant of newborn feeding malpractices and a p<0.05 was deemed to be significant. Results Prevalence of prelacteal feeding, delayed initiation of breastfeeding and colostrum avoidance was approximately 21.9%, 35.5% and 15.5%, respectively. The most common prelacteal food was Rue/“Tenadam”/49 (10.1%). The key reasons for this were: 49 (10.1%) Cultural activity followed by 45 (9.3%) intestinal/ghost/birth clean-ups. Determinants of prelacteal feeding were found to be: mothers who recognize the risks of prelactate feeding, multipara mothers, had ≥4 children and infants birth order between 4 and 6. Likewise, exposure to infant formula advertising, absence of home-to-home health education, multipara mothers and spontaneous vaginal birth were the determinants of colostrum avoidance. Conclusion The study found that one in four and one-third of newborns had experience with prelacteal and delayed breastfeeding, respectively. This makes the newborn feeding practice suboptimal in the city. As a result, behavioral modification programs on the prevention of prelacteal feeding and enhancement of early initiation of colostrum feeding practices are recommended.
Background Workplace violence against nurses is a burgeoning public health issue affecting developing countries’ healthcare industries. Medical staff, particularly nursing staff, have been subjected to a high level of violence from patients, visitors, and coworkers. Objective Aimed to assess the magnitude and associated factors of workplace violence among nurses working in public hospitals in northeast Ethiopia. Methods A multicenter hospital-based cross-sectional study was employed among 568 nurses using census method among public hospitals in Northeast Ethiopia in 2022. The data was gathered using a pretested structured questionnaire and entered into Epi Data version 4.7 before being exported to SPSS version 26 for analysis. Furthermore, at 95% CI, multivariable binary logistic regression was used, and variables with P-values of <.05 were found to be significant. Result Out of the total 534 respondents, 56% had been exposed to workplace violence in the past 12 months, with verbal abuse accounting for 264 (49.4%), physical abuse 112 (21%), bullying 93 (17.2%), and sexual harassment 40 (7.5%). Being female nurses (adjusted odds ratio [AOR = 4.85, 95% CI (3.178, 7.412)]), having an age > 41 [AOR = 2.27, 95% CI (1.101, 4.701)], nurses who had drunk alcohol in the past 30 days [AOR = 7.94, 95% CI (3.027, 20.86)], nurses who drink alcohol in their lifetime [AOR = 3.14, 95% CI (1.328, 7.435)], and male patients [AOR = 4.84, 95% CI (2.496, 9.415)] were positive predictors of workplace violence. Conclusion and recommendation In this study, the magnitude of workplace violence among nurses was relatively higher. Nurses’ sex, age, alcohol habit, and sex of patients were associated with workplace violence. Therefore, intensive facility-based and community-based behavioral change health promotion activities on workplace violence should be done, with particular focus on nurses and patients.
