This study examined the factors that influence male participation in family planning and reproductive health in Bangladesh. Male involvement in family planning and reproductive health was measured by a simple composite index. This study revealed that male involvement in family planning is high about 63.2 percent in this area. Chisquared tests and binary logistic regression analysis were applied to determine the relationship between various kinds of variables and the probability of male involvement in family planning and reproductive health. The findings from the bivariate analysis suggested that age of husband, age of women, number of living children, women's education, women's occupation, husband's education, husband occupation, knowledge on contraceptive methods and STDs, social network and inter-spouse communication had significantly associated with male involvement in family planning and reproductive health. The result of logistic regression analysis showed that males were more likely to participate in family planning and reproductive health whose wives were educated , ,engaged in skilled works, acquainted with high knowledge on contraception, soundly interconnected with social network and get message about family planning and reproductive health from it, favorable spousal communication, husbands and wives had high age. Family planning programme should emphasis on male involvement in the action of family planning and reproductive health procedures in Bangladesh.
Inter-spousal communication is largely influenced to couples on contraceptive use and the decision of appropriate method choice. This paper examined the effects of inter-spousal communication on contraceptive use and method choice in Bangladesh. A total 451 married men aged 15-49 were interviewed from Narsingdi municipality, Bangladesh. Bivariate analysis as chi square test was applied to examine the relationship between spousal communication as well as other socio-demographic variables on contraceptive use. Binary logistic regression was applied to examine the effect of spousal communication on contraceptive use and multinomial logistic regression was applied to examine the effect of spousal communication on method choice. Binary logistic regression showed that inter spousal communication on family planning has strong positive effect on current contraceptive use and multinomial logistic regression showed that inter spousal communication has positive effect on choosing modern and tradition method than none using any method. However, age of husband, age of women, number of living children, media exposure, knowledge on contraception, husband and women occupation, and couple's income were also associated with contraceptive use and method choice in Bangladesh.
This study aims to examine the spaces for citizen participation in the municipal budgeting process and to access the extent of citizen participation in local government decision-making with specific focus on citizen participatory budgeting in Bangladesh. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Nabigonj Municipality of Habigonjin Bangladesh. Both social survey method and in-depth interview have been applied for collecting data from the respondents in the study area. The findings asserted that level of scope of participations was very low in this area but the majority (55.3%) of people was highly positive about the initiation to (Participatory Budgeting) PB. This study also reveals that understanding of participatory budgeting as a concept that leads to improve governance is still very limited and Citizens were incapable of contributing productively to policy-making within the Nabigonj Municipality.
This paper examines the relationship between social capital and mental health of the aging people in Bangladesh. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Madhabdi municipality and data were collected through face to face interview among the aging people. Mental health was measured by using General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). Bivariate analysis such as cross tabulation was applied to presentation of the data and chi-square test was applied to test the association between social capital dimensions and mental health. The chi-square test showed that all dimensions of social capital were related to mental health. Binary logistic regression model was applied to measure the effects of social capital on mental health. The results showed that the aging people who had low neighborhood cohesion ,low social networks ,low norms of reciprocity and low social trust were 1.967 (0.999-3.874), 1.909 (1.015-3.587), 2.302 (1.288-4.113) and 1.705 (.928-3.132) times more likely to say that they have poor mental health status. So, this study reveals that social capital was associated with mental health of the aging people in Bangladesh.
This paper explores all kinds of problems faced by labor migrants under the three major aspects of life i.e social, economic and psychological factors. During the time of post migration, the emigrants face various kinds of socio-economic problems that increase maladjustment with their social environment especially in collecting livelihoods, interactions with other people and also in their attitudes as well as perceptual organizations. In addition, it was observed that there were also changing patterns, having occurred in life style of other family members of migrants. The main investigations were based on whole sphere of life of migrants and their family members in respect of income, expenditure, ability to save money, investment, job attitudes, as well as intra and inter family relationships etc. Stratified sampling procedure had been followed in this study. Structured questionnaire was designed and case study was pursued also to collect necessary information and evidence. Likert Scale has been used to measure attitudes of head of the households of respective families of Sultanpur Village. The findings indicate that though international labor migration changes economic conditions of rural people of Bangladesh by its remittance but this positive change is being occurred for short term only and other aspects of life namely social, psychological that are essential parts of life are being hampered rigorously in the long term.
