Objective: To evaluate the role of Immature platelet fraction in patients with chronic liver disease, a marker for evaluating cirrhotic changes. Methodology: This case control study was conducted at department of Pathology, Aziz Fatima Medical and Dental College, Faisalabad, over a period of Seven months from June 2020 to January 2021. A total of 126 participants were included in the study consisting of 63 patients with chronic liver disease in group A and 63 participants without any known disease in group B as control. The IPF master program in combination with XE-2100 multiparameter automatic hematology analyzer was used to measure the immature platelet fraction. Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid was used to collect the blood sample for IPF measurement and was maintained till analysis on room temperature. Ten repeated analyses, immediately and after 24 hours were done for reproducibility of IPF%. Results: The mean age of liver disease patients was 52.35 ± 13.64 years and in control group the mean age was 51.62 ± 11.27 years. There was no significant (p-value > 0.05) difference between both groups based on age and gender. The hemoglobin level and red cell count was found to be significantly (p-value < 0.05) reduced in cases group. While white blood cells count was comparable in both groups. The mean platelet count was significantly (p-value < 0.05) less in cases group (163.5 ± 90.4 vs 233.4 ± 54.5 (x10*3/µl). The mean value of immature platelet fraction (IPF%) was significantly (p-value < 0.05) raised in cases group (5.62 ± 2.92 vs 3.06 ± 1.87). The multivariate discriminant analysis (MDA) score showed a significant (p-value < 0.05) association with chronic hepatis as compared to other liver related diseases. Conclusions: In chronic liver disease patients, there is an inverse relationship between platelet count and IPF% with decreased platelet count and increased IPF%. The proposed MDA function can be used to identify the cirrhotic changes in liver disease patients.
Objective: To determine the frequency of eosinophilia among patients of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with acute exacerbationMethodology: This cross-sectional study was carried out at Aziz Fatimah Hospital (AFH), Faisalabad from February 2020-May 2020. Ethical approval was taken from Institutional Ethical Committee of Aziz Fatimah Medical and Dental College. After obtaining informed consent, 135 patients of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were enrolled by non-probability consecutive sampling technique according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. All the information was collected on predesigned proforma. Blood samples were drawn and sent to the AFH pathology laboratory for determination of eosinophilia. Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS 21. Mean and percentages were determined for continuous and categorical variables respectively. Chi square test was applied for differences in proportions. Results: This study comprised of 135 patients of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Out of total participants 48.89% (n=66) were male and 51.11% (n=69) were females. Mean±SD of the age of the study subjects was 56.30±7.01 years. Eosinophilia was found in 39.26% (n=53) patients of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with acute exacerbation. Conclusion: Eosinophilia is frequently found in patients of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with acute exacerbation.
Objectives: The aim of our study was to determine the importance and assessment of a health-promoting lifestyle and its possible association with well-being of medical students. Study Design: Cross Sectional Study. Setting: Aziz Fatima Medical and Dental College Faisalabad. Period: June to July 2020. Material & Methods: The English version of Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile, and WHO-5 Well-Being Index were used in our study. Results: The research was conducted with 205 medical students. From which 102(49.8%) belongs from 4-year class and 103(50.2%) from 5-year class. Based on the table, the mean age of the total participants was 22.45(±1.03) years. Among the participants, the mean score of a health-promoting lifestyle was 133.36 ±18.90, which is interpreted as moderate. Lifestyle mean score is greater in 5th-year class as compare to 4th-year class but no significant difference was found because p value is greater than 0.05 there was a significant relationship between well-being and health-promoting lifestyle. Age and gender, were associated with students lifestyles. Independent t test is used to compare the mean difference in gender and MBBS class. Chi square test is used to find the significant association between well-being categories with gender and MBBS class. Pearson correlation coefficient method is used to measure the correlation between well being and healthy lifestyles. Conclusion: A health-promoting lifestyle of students in this study was moderate and they did not have an acceptable level of physical activity. The medical students’ curriculums need to be improved to enhance health promoting lifestyles.
