Within specific subgroups of neonatal patients, taurine supplementation does offer a very significant degree of protection against PNAC. Patients with NEC or severe prematurity are most likely to benefit substantially from taurine supplementation.
Use of CCK-OP failed to reduce significantly the incidence of PNAC or levels of CB. CCK-OP had no effect on other secondary measures and should not be recommended for the prevention of PNAC.
OBJECTIVE:To compare hemoglobin degradation and bilirubin production before and during phototherapy in preterm infants.
BACKGROUND:Hemoglobin is catabolized into globin and heme, which is degraded by microsomal heme oxygenase into equimolar carbon monoxide and biliverdin. Biliverdin is then reduced into bilirubin. CO is excreted exclusively by the lungs; therefore, end-tidal carbon monoxide, corrected for inhaled CO (ETCO c ), reflects hemoglobin degradation and total bilirubin production.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
