New aromatic‐containing ionene polymers having N,N‐diphenyl pendent groups were synthesized for the first time by solution polycondensation of N,N,N ′,N ′‐tetraphenyl‐m‐xylylenediamine with aliphatic dihalides like p‐xylylene dibromide in acetonitrile at 200°C under a high pressure of 500 MPa. The inherent viscosity values of the polymers were rather low. These N,N‐diphenyl‐pendent aromatic ionene polymers were soluble in polar solvents such as DMF and m‐cresol but not in water, and showed normal polyelectrolyte behavior in ethanol solutions.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
