Librarians and archivists need special training in the use of rare law books and manuscripts that includes not only the protective functions with respect to rare materials but also education in the history of law, its literature, and its historical methodology. The article describes two different training programs: one, at Yale, trains law students in the use of historical legal materials; and the other, at the University of Virginia Rare Book School, trains librarians, archivists, historians, collectors and dealers in the care and use of rare law books and manuscripts. The article concludes with suggestions for model curricula for law librarians in the use of rare materials.
