Ce texte relate comment deux missions de recherche d’observation participante auprès de personnes étrangères irrégularisées souhaitant traverser la frontière franco-italienne et de leurs soutiens ont généré des dilemmes moraux liés au cumul de deux casquettes, celle de chercheur·euse universitaire et celle de solidaire : hésitation entre respect de la loi et respect de sa conscience morale et politique, tergiversations entre visibilisation de certaines actions de désobéissance et invisibilisation d’autres pratiques illégales, tensions d’ordre éthique liées à l’ambiguïté de l’obtention du consentement des enquêté·es lors d’une observation immersive, difficultés à concilier le respect de la neutralité axiologique de la recherche avec l’engagement dans un terrain militant offensif et revendicatif. Les vocations, ressources et contraintes liées aux affiliations, académique d’une part, et militante d’autre part, sont passées en revue. La notion de « perruque de lutte universitaire » est alors proposée comme outil pour dépasser la contradiction entre les deux positions et trancher, résoudre certains de ces dilemmes moraux.
