Consumption decision and likely expenditure are critical fundamentals that may ultimately shape the future of GM crops development and deployment in Nigeria. The present study constituted an attempt to examine factors of significance with bearing influence on these key consumer-led issues. Structured and pre-tested questionnaire were employed to elicit response from consumers. In all, 232 responses were analysed with Heckman two-stage selection model. The socio-economic data shows that majority of respondents (45.3%) are civil servants with outstanding 94% of approached respondents attaining tertiary education. The average age stood at 32 years and household size of 4 persons. From the analysis, income was significant but cast a negative influence on consumption willingness. On the contrary, health and environmental benefits emerged significant and proceed in the same direction as consumption decision. Expenditure by consumers on GM crops in the study area may be determined by age and household size of consumers as indicated by the significance of these two factors. It follows that GM crops may find greater appeal and acceptance among older consumers and medium to large-sized household.

paddy and locally milled rice marketers in the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. It specifically examined the marketing efficiencies and factors influencing marketing efficiencies of paddy and locally milled rice marketers in the study area. Primary data were collected using well-structured pre-tested questionnaires while a multistage sampling technique was adopted to obtain responses from respondents. Descriptive (mean, frequency and percentages) and inferential statistics (shepherd’s index and multiple regression analysis) were used to analyze the data. In using shepherd’s index, the results revealed 78% and 77% marketing efficiencies for paddy and locally milled rice respectively while the multiple regression analysis revealed sex, household size, availability of storage facility and contract marketing arrangement were significant to marketing efficiency of paddy rice; while membership of a market association, cost of purchasing rice, selling price of rice, availability of storage facility and contract arrangement were significant to marketing efficiency of locally milled rice. The study concludes that paddy rice marketers are more efficient in the study area and therefore recommends the initiation of more contract arrangements between investors and marketers in the area, while marketers should be encouraged to join marketing associations to take advantage of the endless benefits to be gained. It also recommends the formulation of policies that favour inclusivity of youths and women in the trade.

The study examined the determinants of farmers’ willingness-to-accept rice seed production technology and their potential capacity for seed production in Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria using primary data collected from 220 rice farming households. Heckman two-stage selection model analysis revealed that willingness-to-accept rice production technology and the potential capacity to produce rice seeds were influenced by certain factors, the results showed that age of the household heads (z = -1.80), dependency ratio (z = -1.77), farming experience (z = 2.68) at 1%, rice farming experience (z = -3.02), income (z = 5.62), land ownership (z = 3.66), family labour (z = 2.28), hired labour (z = -3.11), training in rice farming/production (z = 2.71) and training in rice seed production (z = -2.76) were statistically significant and influenced rice production potential capacity among the rice farming households at  in the study area. The study then recommends that proactive land tenure policies and training in agronomic practices are needed to enhance rice seed production capacity of the rice farming households in the Federal Capacity Territory, Nigeria.
