A discalculia é um transtorno específico da aprendizagem, causado por uma desordem orgânica e afeta principalmente a habilidade em matemática. Cerca de 3% a 6% das crianças em idade escolar tem discalculia do desenvolvimento, mas muitas vezes a disfunção passa despercebida em decorrência da normalidade da dificuldade na área. Os estudos acerca da discalculia estão avançando e possibilitam pensarmos caminhos e intervenções para beneficiar o sujeito discalcúlico. Neste trabalho, foi realizada uma revisão bibliográfica e um estudo de caso com um aluno de uma escola municipal no Rio Grande do Sul, a fim de verificar se a dificuldade em matemática apresentada por ele caracterizava-se como discalculia. A partir disso, verificou-se que, com as intervenções adequadas – propostas pela literatura revisitada –, o sujeito não demonstra sinais de ter uma desordem orgânica. Além disso, foi possível concluir a carência de estudos na área, o que entendemos acarretar em um despreparo para que os profissionais possam identificar a disfunção. Com o conhecimento e a intervenção correta, entendemos que é possível potencializarmos o processo de ensino-aprendizagem do sujeito discalcúlico.Palavras-chave: Discalculia. Matemática.
