Objetivo: o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a condição gengival e a presença na microbiota subgengival das bactérias Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans e Tannerella forsythia em pacientes periodontalmente saudáveis submetidos a tratamento com aparelho ortodôntico fixo. Métodos: vinte pacientes foram distribuídos em dois grupos: grupo experimental (GE; n=10) – tinham má oclusão e receberam tratamento ortodôntico; e grupo controle (GC; n = 10) – não tinham má oclusão e nunca tinham se submetido a tratamento ortodôntico. Amostras microbiológicas foram coletadas antes e três e seis meses depois da instalação do aparelho ortodôntico fixo, e analisadas pela técnica de reação em cadeia polimerase. O índice de placa (IP) e o sangramento à sondagem (SS) também foram registrados. Os dados foram analisados com ANOVA, t-Student e o teste Exato de Fisher (p < 0,05). Resultado: a média do índice de placa diminuiu em ambos os grupos, bem como foi observada uma diferença estatística entre os grupos com três e seis meses (p < 0,05). Quanto à presença da bactéria A. actinomycetemcomitans, foi detectada apenas no GE com três e seis meses, e a T. forsythia foi detectada em dois pacientes em ambos os grupos com seis meses (p > 0,05). Conclusão: foi possível demonstrar altos valores no IP dos pacientes com aparelhos ortodôntico, se comparados com o GC em todas as avaliações. O aparelho ortodôntico parece aumentar a presença de patógenos putativos periodontais.
