Depuis l’arrivée d’une nouvelle équipe dirigeante en 2005, la Croix-Rouge Française est engagée dans une mutation profonde de son organisation interne et son mode de gouvernance. D’une association humanitaire traditionnelle gérée par des bénévoles, elle s’est transformée en une entreprise associative gestionnaire d’établissements. Même si cette facette est moins connue du grand public, la Croix-Rouge française fait partie des associations-employeurs (avec 17 700 salariés, 53 000 bénévoles et un milliard de budget) évoluant dans un environnement de plus en plus concurrentiel et contraignant. Elle est actuellement confrontée à trois défis majeurs : la transformation de son modèle économique lié à la raréfaction des ressources publiques ; la mutation des formes d’engagement vers un modèle d’engagement distancié et la défense d’un projet de société d’humaniser la vie. A partir d’une enquête qualitative approfondie de la Croix-Rouge française (réalisation de 104 entretiens entre 2010 et 2013) auprès de salariés et de bénévoles (élus et de terrain), l’objectif de cet article est double : qualifier le nouveau modèle économique de la Croix-Rouge française en le situant par rapport aux quatre grands modèles économiques associatifs décrits par Tchernonog (2007, 2012), et interroger la soutenabilité de ce modèle, face aux risques d’isomorphisme institutionnel (Di Maggio et Powell, 1983) analysé par Enjolras (1998) et Bidet (2003). Il ressort de ce travail monographique que la Croix-Rouge française, pour faire face à un triple isomorphisme (coercitif, par la réduction des financements publics, mimétique, par la présence à la direction générale de managers venant du privé lucratif ou du public et, normatif par l’imprégnation de la logique performance), a adopté un modèle économique « dual ». Ce modèle dual correspond à la juxtaposition de deux modèles économiques aux logiques diamétralement opposées. D’un côté, on trouve une logique « réciprocitaire » du don, de l’autre se développe une logique gestionnaire dominée par des enjeux financiers et par la concurrence avec les autres associations du secteur. Ceci amène à penser que la soutenabilité du modèle économique dual de la Croix-Rouge française (militant versus gestionnaire) est aujourd’hui questionnée par des arbitrages relevant d’une rationalité technico-instrumentale.
Ces dernières années, les entreprises témoignent d’un intérêt grandissant pour les préoccupations environnementales, dont le réchauffement climatique, s’exprimant à travers leur Responsabilité Sociale des Entreprises. La présente recherche prend une perspective originale à ce sujet, celle des salariés. Elle explore les effets de l’action de l’entreprise dans la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique sur l’identification organisationnelle et l’engagement organisationnel des salariés. Sur la base d’un échantillon de 310 salariés, les analyses par équations structurelles mettent en évidence l’existence d’un effet indirect de la perception de l’action de l’organisation sur l’engagement affectif du salarié via l’identification organisationnelle. Les résultats sont discutés et des implications managériales sont proposées.
