The article presents the results of a survey on dictionary use in Europe, focusing on general monolingual dictionaries. The survey is the broadest survey of dictionary use to date, covering close to 10,000 dictionary users (and non-users) in nearly thirty countries. Our survey covers varied user groups, going beyond the students and translators who have tended to dominate such studies thus far. The survey was delivered via an online survey platform, in language versions specific to each target country. It was completed by 9,562 respondents, over 300 respondents per country on average. The survey consisted of the general section, which was translated and presented to all participants, as well as country-specific sections for a subset of 11 countries, which were drafted by collaborators at the national level. The present report covers the general section. IntroductionResearch into dictionary use has become increasingly important in recent years. In contrast to 15 years ago, new findings in this area are presented every year, e.g. at every Euralex or eLex conference. These studies range from questionnaire or log file studies to smaller-scale studies focussing on eye tracking, usability, or other aspects of dictionary use measurable in a lab. For an overview of different studies,
Abstract:The latest research conducted by De Jong (2014) indicated that only a few European academic dictionaries, among over one hundred and fifty, use pictorial illustrations. On the other hand, it has been mentioned several times in the literature (related to both printed and electronic reference works) that visual content makes a general dictionary more attractive for the user. Therefore a new methodology, enhancing graphical strategy in lexicography, would be proposed. Firstly, a thematic division of meanings will be applied to the authentic multimodal explanations taken from two general dictionaries (verbal definition and graphical facility). As a result, commonly illustrated thematic fields will be shown along with the ones used by lexicographers in a restrained way, as well as the fields left without illustrations for some reasons. The exemplary meanings from these latest, "orphan" groups will be confronted with the query results from the authentic multimodal corpora. Such a procedure will give us some more detailed information about the obstacles connected with illustrating this particular set of senses (for example multimodal denotation and connotation problems). This article was presented as a paper at the COST ENeL WG3 meeting Between Corpora and Dictionaries/Crowdsourcing and Gamification, held in Budapest, Hungary, 24-25 February 2017. http://lexikos.journals.ac.za Dictionary Tradition vs. Pictorial Corpora 133 graphique). Conséquemment, des champs thématiques habituellement illustrés seront exposés, de même que ceux utilisés de façon restreinte par les lexicographes et ceux souvent laissés sans illustration pour diverses raisons. Des exemples des sens de ce groupe "orphelin" seront confrontés aux résultats d'une investigation des corpora authentique multimodaux. Cette procédure permettra d'obtenir des informations plus détaillées sur les obstacles qui empêchent d'illustrer un ensemble par...
Usage and lexicographical practice (example of the verb dedykować ‘to dedicate’ in modern Polish)The purpose of this paper is to analyze the contemporary usage of the Polish verb dedykować (to dedicate) and its participle dedykowany (dedicated). During last few years under the influence of English semantics and pragmatics this verb became one of the most popular words in the Polish marketing and IT jargon. The data provided by the National Corpus of Polish enables to state that the contemporary usage of the verb differs significantly from the semantic description published in the dictionaries of Polish. Therefore the scope of this paper is to promote the corpus driven approach to the lexicography. Since the new meaning of the analyzed verb is an English borrowing the paper deals also with the problem of adjusting English morphological patterns to the rules of Slavic verbal inflexion. As it can be observed in the text this grammatical divergence leads in the case of new borrowings to the widely diversified and unstable language usage.
Hucpa/chucpa. Analiza leksykologiczna i leksykograficznaS ł o w a k l u c z o w e: jidyszyzm, zapożyczenie leksykalne, polisemia, słownik jednojęzyczny.Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest analizie językowej leksemu hucpa we współczesnej polszczyźnie. Punktem wyjścia rozważań będą istniejące dotychczas opisy słownikowe tej jednostki leksykalnej. Następnie przeprowadzona zostanie jej charakterystyka leksykologiczna, a w szczególności semantyczna. W efekcie uzyskamy obraz złożoności znaczeniowej leksemu, co umożliwi sformułowanie ogólnych uwag odnoszących się do praktyki leksykograficznej. Hucpa/chucpa w słownikach języka polskiegoWyraz hucpa odnotowany został po raz pierwszy w SJPDor. We wcześniejszych słownikach ogólnych języka polskiego jest on nieobecny. Autorzy przyjęli formę hasłową (ortograficzną) hucpa. Definicję poprzedza kwalifikacja zakresowa, w myśl której leksem przynależy do odmiany potocznej języka ogólnego.
