In this article I discuss the decision making of two Brazilian engineers who have immigrated to Québec, based on life story interviews. Four main challenges were identified: (1) how to announce their decision to migrate; (2) how to master the French language; (3) how to deal with the lack of information concerning the administrative formalities, and (4) how to cope with the situation of uncertainty concerning their capacity to adapt to the destination society. The analysis indicates that the decision to emigrate is made in the sending society, that it is developed in social networks of migrants still living in the sending society and that it is prepared for through the mobilisation and creation of additional resources where online networks with Brazilian migrants already settled in the destination society play an important role.
