This paper provides a review of research on online education, with a focus on the methods used to promote academic integrity. Broader issues about how and why academic dishonesty occurs, and the mixed findings in relation to whether or not academic dishonesty may be more or less prevalent in online classes are discussed. Understanding the varied nature of academic dishonesty can improve the implementation of methods used to promote academic integrity, and more importantly, provide students, faculty, and staff with an ethical framework that can extend beyond academia
